TRAVEL HORIZON: SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2023 LONG-HAUL TRAVEL BAROMETER METHODOLOGY •Target-Potential travellers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the US.•Method–1,000 online interviews with national representatives (18-70 years old), per market, per wave. •Examined travel themes: ✓People’s intention to travel outside their region of residence*✓Barriers and activators to travel✓Important criteria for the selection of destinations✓Spending behaviour in the context of raising travel costs✓Intended length of stay and daily budget✓Travel preferences regarding destinations, experiences and preferred transport service to move within Europe In all markets, the survey monitors respondents’ intention to travel outside the region of residence (e.g., North America forthe USA). The only exception is the Russian Federation,where the intention to travel outside the Commonwealth of Independent States is measured. While data is still being collectedinthe Russian market, this issue of the Long-Haul •Insights in the following slides refer to the travel horizon September-December 2023 ( 4 months horizon) •The fieldwork was conducted in August 2023 The data files are only available to the members ofpartner organisations.The survey is meant to gauge travellers’ attitudes and intentions and not to quantify demand levels. SENTIMENT FOROVERSEAS TRAVEL September-December 2023 China's enthusiasm for long-haul travel soars in late 2023 ThepositivesentimentforoverseastravelfromSeptembertoDecember2023issurginginChina,withanimpressive85%of respondentseager to travelinternationally during thisperiod.Of them,74%haveselectedEuropeastheirnextdestination.ThetraveleagernessisledbyChineseaged34-49(83%)and Severalfactorscontributetothisunfoldingenthusiasm-Thepent-updemandfortravelplaysapivotalrole,asdoesthealignmentofthesurveyedtravelhorizonwithChina'sGoldenWeek-aneight-daybreakinlateSeptemberand early October,providing extra time for travel.Moreover,in August 2023,consumer Brazilians' travel enthusiasm remains stable Brazilians'intentionsforlong-haultraveltoEuropebetweenSeptemberandDecember2023resemblelastyear'strends.Over50%ofrespondentsexpressadesiretoexploretheOldContinentduringthisperiod,withheightenedenthusiasmcomingfromBraziliansaged18to49andthoseresidingintheNorth-Eastand Nevertheless,amidst this positive sentiment,concerns arise.In August 2023,Brazilian ConsumerConfidenceexhibited improvement,reflecting a brighter outlook on the nation's economic landscape.However,thegovernment’splanstointroduceemergencymeasurestobolstertaxrevenueposeconcerns The US travel sentiment reaches new heights towards the year’s end. Inthe US,despite declining consumer confidence,driven by concerns over rising inflation,the travelsentimenthasimprovedcomparedtoayearago.Morethanhalfofrespondentswanttoembarkonlong-hauljourneysduringthelastfourmonthsof2023,thehighestpercentagerecordedsince2016.Ofthese TravelsentimentisnotablystrongeramongmoreaffluentUStravellers(61%vs.30%inotherincomegroups).Concerningage,theintentiontovisitEuropeishigheramongrespondentsaged18-34(57%)andthoseaged35-49(50%),whileseniortravellers(50+)aresignificantlymorehesitanttovisittheregion(20%) Canadians’ interest in visiting different world regions grows Amidsluggisheconomicgrowthandpersistentinflation,Canadians'sentimentforoverseastravelinautumnremainsnearlyunchangedcomparedtoayearago.Notably,38%ofrespondentswanttotraveltoEuropeduringthisperiod,withthestrongestsentimentemergingfromtheyoungesttravellers.Geographically, Comparedtotherestoftheanalysedmarkets,Canadiansaremoreopentoexploringotherglobalregionsthisautumn.The motivation behind this preference includes concerns about the high travel costsassociatedwith European destinations,an appreciation for exploring closer areas,and limitations on Modest interest in travelling abroad from Australia Inthelastfourmonthsof2023,aroundathirdofAustraliansplantotraveltoEurope,showingaslight3%dipfromthepreviousyear.Severalfactorsmayhaveinfluencedthisrelativelysubduedintentionfortripstotheoldcontinent.Firstly,SeptembertoDecemberalignswithAustralia'sspringseason,whichoffersgreat Additionally,Australiansarediversifyingtheirdestinationinterests.AmongthosenotplanningtotraveltoEuropeinthenextfourmonths,21%areeyeingtheUnitedStates,20%areconsideringSingapore,16%arethinkingaboutThailand,and15%areshowinginterestinJapan.Lastly,fluctuationsintheAustralian dollar'svaluemayhaveaffectedtravellers'confidenceandwheretheychoosetotravel.Notably,40%of The Japanese sentiment finally showing signs of improvement TheJapanesetravelmarketsawaremarkableincreaseinthenumberofoutboundtravellersthisJune2023,andtheresultsofthissurveyaddfurthertothisdynamic.Intentionsforlong-haultripsbetweenSeptemberandDecember2023havesignificantlyimprovedcomparedtothepastfourautumnseasons.
