TRAVEL HORIZONS: JANUARY-DECEMBER & JANUARY-APRIL LONG-HAUL TRAVEL BAROMETER METHODOLOGY HOW TO READ THE RESULTS? This project is realised withthe support of: SENTIMENT FOROVERSEASTRAVEL IN 2023 Travel horizon:January-December 2023 INTENTION FOR LONG-HAUL TRAVEL PICKS-UP IN 2023 TRAVELLERS IN KEY MARKETS ARE OPEN TO VISITING FAR-AWAY DESTINATIONS THIS YEAR. •Japanistheonlysurveyedmarketwherepeopleremainpessimisticabout travelling outside their region of •Inothermarkets,the sentimentisstrong,withatleast60%ofrespondentsplanninganoverseastripthisyear. •ResultsareparticularlyoptimisticamongBrazilians,with4in5sharingtheireagernesstotravellong-haul,and37% •TravelintentionsarealsostrongamongChinese(78%),potentiallydriven by the removal of the zero Covid-19policyin December 2022,which happened during thedatacollectionperiod.Itshouldbenoted,however,thattheshareofthosemostcertainabouttravellingwaslower(15%)than in other markets(e.g.Brazil,Canada and THE TRAVEL SENTIMENT INDEX SURPASSES PRE-COVID-19 VALUES IN BRAZIL, CHINA AND THE US •Thechallengingeconomiccontextmarkedbyhighinflationandthesurgeinenergypriceshasnotdampenedtraveldesirefor2023.Onthecontrary,thelong-haultravelsentimentindexhasreacheditshighestvaluesinBrazil,ChinaandtheUSinthelastfiveyears. •InCanada,thesentimentindexisalsopositive,withaslightlylowervaluewhenEuropeisthedestination.Thiscouldbeattributedtosomefearsofeconomicrecessionandtheperceptionofdestinationswithintheregionbeingexpensive.40%ofCanadianswhodonotplantotraveloutsideNorthAmericathisyearmentionedtheirfinancesasthemain •ThepictureremainsgloomyinJapan,withsentimentindexlevelsclosetothebase(100).Onapositivenote,theliftingoftravelrestrictionsinnearbydestinationsandpopularregionsforJapanese(e.g.,EuropeandtheAsiaPacific)mayboostconsumerconfidenceanddrivesomedemandoverthecourseoftheyear.
