LONG-HAUL TRAVEL BAROMETER METHODOLOGY HOW TO READ THE RESULTS? Intentiontotravelismeasuredonanindexthatreflectsthedominantsentimentexpressedbyamarket;eitherpositiveornegative.Theindexistiedtoabaseof100.Valuesabove100indicateapositiveevolution,whereasvaluesbelow100indicatenegativeattitudestowardstravelinagiventimeperiod. •Target-Potential travellers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the US.•Method–1,000 online interviews with national representatives (18-70 years old), per market,per wave.•Frequency:Interviews are conducted 3 times per year and provide insights into the travel TheLong-HaulTravelBarometerscapturepeople’sintentiontotravelabroadandarenotmeanttoquantifytheprospectdemandlevels. WHEN EUROPE IS THE DESTINATION, HOWEVER, THE INDEX VALUES STAGNATE, WITH ONLY MARGINAL IMPROVEMENTS •ThetravelsentimentindexintheUSshowsthatlong-haultravelintenthasimprovedslightly(+3points)comparedtothesameperiodlastyearandremainsabovethepre-pandemiclevelof107pointsregisteredinSeptember-December2019.However,whenEuropeisthedestination,travelintenthasslightlydeclinedto94points,with41%of •Russian'stravelsentimentremainsvolatile,withtheautumnshowingsignsofimprovementforbothlong-haul(136points)andEuropean(87points)destinationsinlinewithpastseasonaltrends.However,thesentimentremainsbelowthelevelsregisteredoverthecorrespondingperiodinthepast3years,reflectingthedifficultiesforRussianstotraveloutsidetheircountryandconcernsaboutpotentialanti-Russiansentimentatthedestinationtheyvisit. •InCanada,theresumptionofflightconnectionsandthegradualremovaloftravelrestrictionsresultsinapositivetravelsentiment.Thesentimentindexforlonghaultravelisat136pointswhileforEuropeitsitsat104points,suggestingapotentialstartofarecoveryininternationaltravelfromthismarket. WHEN EUROPE IS THE DESTINATION, HOWEVER, THE INDEX VALUES STAGNATE, WITH ONLY MARGINAL IMPROVEMENTS •InBrazil,thetravelsentimentremainsverystablecomparedtothesummer,withlong-haultravelregistering150points,whileaslightincreaseintravelintentionforEurope(103points)canalsobeobserved.TheadditionofdirectflightsfromBraziltoMadridattheendof2022isexpectedtofacilitatefurtherconnectionswithEurope. •ThetravelsentimenttrendsinJapanareuniquefromothermarketsinthattheintenttovisitEurope(92points)isabovethatoflong-haultravel(82points).Nevertheless, Japanisarisk-aversemarket,andthesentimentlevelhasremainedinnegativeterritorysincethestartoftheCOVID-19pandemic.•Despitethezero-COVIDstrategy,ChinesetravelsentimentforEuropehasonceagainturnedpositive(103points),with 64%ofsurveyedrespondentswishingtovisittheregioninthecomingmonths.Althoughtheseresultsmaybeoutrunningthecurrenttravelpossibilities,theysuggestthatthetravelplansofChinesecouldpotentiallymaterializeoncetherestrictionsarelifted,althoughwitharound100flightsperdaycomparedtomorethan2,600before2020,theindustrymayneedabitoftimetorestore Evolution of intention to travel long-haul and to Europe (4 months horizon) Index Base:100 (>100 = expansion, <100 = decline) WHAT PREVENTS PEOPLE FROMTRAVELLING LONG-HAUL IN Sample size per market: Australia:414Brazil: 299Canada: 423China: 288Japan: 778Russia: 590US: 481 PEOPLE’S FINANCIAL INSECURITY IS THEMAIN BARRIERTOLONG-HAUL TRAVEL A third of respondents not planning to travelas markets did not plan to travel in the next months,while othersare hampered by either economic or Covid-19 concerns THE SHARE OF RUSSIANS PLANNING TO TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES (CIS) IS LOW BUT SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO PREVIOUS AUTUMN PERIODS As expected, however, the number of Russians choosing to travel to Europe decreases at the Russians' sentiment towards Europe AmongtheRussiansnotplanningtotraveloutsidetheCISorplanningtotravelbutnottoEurope(N=762),46%sharethatthecurrentsituationnegativelyimpactedtheirinterestinvisitingtheregioninthenextmonths;40%saythatEuroperemainsanattractivedestinationandtheywouldrevisititinthefuture;while14%statethattheywillreplaceEuropewithotherclose-bydestinationsinthenextmonths.
