Epidemiological Updaten.33, published27January20261 Inthisedition: •Overview•Global epidemiological update•WHO regional overviews•Focuson selectedsubregions andcountries Overview Dataasof28December2025 •In December 2025(epidemiological weeks49to52) a total of17327new cholera and acute watery diarrhoea(AWD) cases were reported from16countries, territoriesandareas (hereafter countries) acrossthreeWHOregions, showing a25% decrease fromNovember. In thisperiod,137cholera-related deathswerereportedglobally, a16% decrease from the previous month. •Cholera cases anddeaths in December 2025 were 65% and 74% lower than inDecember2024 (48 967 casesand 521 deaths across 25 countries). •From 1 January to28December2025, a cumulative total of614828cholera cases and7598deaths were reportedfrom 33 countries across fiveWHO regions, with the Eastern Mediterranean Region recording the highestnumbers, followed by the African Region, the South-East Asia Region, the Region of the Americas, and theWestern Pacific Region. No cases were reportedfrom the European Region during this period. •In recent years, conflict, mass displacement, disasters from natural hazards, and climate change have intensifiedoutbreaks, particularly in rural and flood-affected areas, where poor infrastructure and limited healthcare accessdelay treatment. These cross-border factors have made cholera outbreaks increasingly complex and harder tocontrol. •Thedata presented hereshould be interpretedwithcaution.Potential underreporting and reporting delaysmayaffect timeliness and accuracy, whilevariations in surveillance systems, standardcase definitions, and laboratorycapacitiescanlimit direct comparabilityamongcountries. These factors also influencethe global case fatality rate(CFR), requiring careful examination.Unless otherwisespecified, the term 'cholera cases'includesboth suspectedand confirmed cases. Data in this reportmay be adjusted retrospectivelyas more information becomes available. For the latest data, pleaseconsultWHO’sGlobal Cholera and AWD Dashboard. All data are subject to verification andchange due to data availability and accessibility.Respective figures and numbers will be updated as more information becomes available. The data in Table 1 includes suspected, rapiddiagnostic test (RDT)-positive, and culture-confirmed cholera cases. As multiple countries report only total data on deaths, the reported CFR is calculated throughout based on the totalnumber of deaths reported. The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) recommends thatCFR be calculated using onlyhealthfacility deaths, with the number of community deathsreported separately.** Afghanistan and Myanmar report AWD cases.
