The rest of Europe isrecovering slower, challenged by the warin Ukraine among other reasons. Top 10 intercontinental cities The list of intercontinental cities is led by the U.S. with seven cities in the top10. However, Dubai is performing very well in third place. While global business travel rebounds, the pace of recovery inChina has been more gradual, Beijing has dropped off the listfrom its 2019 position as the eighth most visited intercontinentalcity for European business travelers, and Shanghai has fallenfrom second to 10th place. Despite this, we’re encouraged by therecent visa exemptions for travelers from certain Europeancountries, and overall, more lenient visa procedures.Weanticipate a significant resurgence in business travel to China in2024, evidenced by the early increase in travel volumes we’veseen in the first two months of 2024. Post-Brexit,EU and Swiss citizens now need a validpassport to travel to the U.K. and can nolonger freely enter the country with anational ID card, effective since October2021. For comparison, within the U.S.,business class and economy class makeup for 53% and 36% of intercontinentalflights, respectively. Most flights in Europe are direct (84%),due in large part to how well-connectedroute networks are within countries.Intercontinental travel is almost equallysplit between direct and connectingflights. The chosen service class, type of flight and even the route have adirect effect on CO2emissions. For example, direct flights offer ashorter route and use less fuel on landing and take-off thanconnecting flights.By analyzing their emissions data, companiescan hone in on what behaviors or policies they want to influenceor change to support smart and purposeful travel. The countryhas an extensive railway network, butcapacity is limited, and train servicesmay end before the traveler’sdestination. Travelers may still needtranspor
