Global Pension Finance Watch–SecondQuarter 2026Results as ofJune30, 2026 Positive SecondQuarterIndexMovements All regions saw an increase in the pension index during Q2, as positive investment returns generallyoutweighed the impact of higher liabilities. The U.S. recorded the strongest improvement, driven by robustasset performance that more than offset liability growth. Other markets also reported meaningful gains,supported by favorable investment returns and stable liability positions. The U.K. saw the smallest increase,with liability growth largely offsetting asset gains. While it is always the case thattheGlobal Pension Finance Watch captures results at the end of eachquarter, we particularly want to highlight the“point in time”view of this publication in light ofrecentvolatility.WTWsupports the daily monitoring of pension funded status and other keypension financialmetrics forthose organizations wishing to inform key business decisions. The WTW Pension Indexis the ratio of the marketvalue of assets to the projected benefit obligation(PBO) for a hypothetical benchmark plan. Broader risk management perspective Beyond financial monitoring, we observe multinationals withthe greatest success in managing their defined benefitpension risks exhibit a number of consistent characteristics. Investmentreturns andliabilitygrowth Returns werepositivethis quarteracrossall countries. Benchmark discount rates were relatively stable over the quarter. The most notable decreases wereobserved in Canada and UK, and increases in Brazil and Japan. *Discount rates for the benchmark plans were determined usingWTW’RATE: i k ml gy iiwhere it is available.Thereisgenerallymore than one acceptableapproachfordetermining the discount rateineach country.The approach usedfor index purposes isone of several possible approaches; otheracceptablemethodologies may result in higher or lower discount rates. Liability valuesincreasedover the quarteracross all countriesexceptBrazil andJapan. Note: The liability growth factor reflects the net change in thebmk pl’PBO due to interest accumulationand changes in financial assumptions. Brazil Domesticequitiesshowed negative returns whilebonds showedpositivereturns.Overall, thebenchmark portfolioincreasedby0.3% over thequarter. The nominal benchmark discount rateincreased42basis points over the quarter.This change,combined with interest accumulation,resulted in aliabilitydecreaseof2.0%over thequarter.
