Welcome to our Nutrition and Food Safety (NFS) Newsletter. In this issue, we present newWHO publications, notable meetings, events and key campaigns in the field of nutritionand food safety that took place in July and August, and upcoming dates to watch for. Low-income countries saw food price inflationrates as high as 30%. Rising food inflationlikely worsened acute malnutrition, riskingthehealth of millions of vulnerablechildren. Publications The State of Food Security andNutrition in the World (SOFI) report This year’sThe State of Food Security andNutrition in the World reportwas publishedon 28 July 2025 by five United Nationsspecialized agencies, with a focus on causesand consequences of recent food inflation. In2024, an estimated 8.2 percent of the globalpopulation, or about 673 million people,experienced hunger, down from 8.5 percentin 2023 and 8.7 percent in 2022. However,while global hunger declined, there was asteadyrise in hunger across Africa andwestern Asia. In low-income countries, 544.7million people—that’s 72% of the population—couldn’t afford a healthy diet in 2024. WHO global anaemia estimates:key findings, 2025 UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Groupjoint child malnutrition estimates Anaemia in women remains a global healthchallenge, affecting 1 in 3 women aged 15–49. Thenew brief on key findings from the2025 edition of the WHO anaemia estimatesprovides a snapshot of the current status ofanaemiaat the country,regional andgloballevels,highlighting the need ofprogress toward achieving the global targetof reducing anaemia by 50% by 2030, inalignmentwiththeSustainableDevelopment Goals. Towards a stronger evidence baseon wasting and nutritionaloedema in infants and children WHO published a new supplement intheBritishMedical Journal(BMJ)GlobalHealth,"Towards a stronger evidencebase on wasting and nutritional oedemain infants and children."The papers sharekeyinsights from experts and thedevelopers of the 2023WHO guideline ontheprevention and management ofwastingandnutritionaloedema,highlightingevidence gaps,researchpriorities and ways to strengthen futurework and inspire innovation. Other publications Quantitative risk assessment ofListeria monocytogenesin foods WHOdecision-making tool A quantitative risk assessment model forListeriamonocytogenes in ready-to-eatcantaloupewas published in Foods, a peer-reviewed journal on food science, adding tothespecial issue on quantitative riskassessment ofListeria monocytogenes. WHO’s Global Coordination Mechanism onNCDs(GCM/NCD)developed a tool,SupportingMemberStatesinreachinginformeddecision-makingonengagingwithprivate sector entities forNCD preventionand control: A practicaltool, now available in French, Spanish andPortuguese, in addition to English. The toolprovideshealthauthoritiesandgovernmentswithasystematicmethodology to make informed decisionson engaging the private sector to supportthe public sector efforts in the preventionand control of NCDs. Ad hoc joint FAO/WHO expertconsultation on risk assessment offood allergens Thismeeting report summarizes theconclusionsof the expert consultationconvened by WHO and FAO on 16– 20 June2025. Gaza Famine has been confirmed for the first time in Gaza. WHO has been consistently engagedin the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis for Gaza. IPC is a multi-stakeholder global initiative aimed at enhancing food security and nutrition analysis toinform decisions. NFS provided support to partners to enhance the understanding of healthchallenges and the interplay between food insecurity, acute malnutrition and public health,contributing to the evidence informedIPC analysisreleased on 22 August, supported by thelatest evidence,to draw urgent attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. In July alone, more than 12,000 children were identified as acutely malnourished, a six-fold increase since the start of the year
