The sustainabilitytransformation:Apeopleagenda 02. The sustainability transformation:A people agenda These changes in the operating environment arefueling an inexorable shift toward sustainabilityacross the business community — a shift awayfrom business models and practices thatfrequently extract value, externalize cost and risk, and exacerbate global challenges, toward thosethat support a more just and regenerative systemwhere all people can live well and within the limitsof what our planet can provide. Today’s business environment ischanging rapidly Climate change. Nature loss. Rising inequality.Three existential challenges that arefundamentally changing the world in whichbusiness operates. These challenges aredepleting the natural resources and destabilizingthe environmental conditions that businessdepends on. They are eroding people’s trust inkey institutions and systems, including businessand markets, and fueling civil and politicalupheaval. They are shifting consumer sentimentand changing what workers expect from theiremployers. They are driving investors to take acloser look at companies’ social and environmentalimpacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities. And they are leading policymakers to establishnew regulations, requirements, and programs. While we are still in the early stages of thisshift, a sustainable business transformation isgathering steam. Many multinational companiesrecognize the increasing strategic importanceof sustainability and are proactively assessingoperational risks and seizing commercialopportunities accordingly. Long-term ambitionsto reach net zero, become nature-positive,and improve social outcomes have been setout, and businesses across all sectors areinnovating, developing, and scaling promising newtechnologies and practices that will enable themto capitalize on historic new markets. Climate, nature and equity challengesdriving an increasingly complexbusiness environment The continued shift toward sustainability willtransform our social and economic systems andhave a profound impact on business, much inthe same way that the digital transformationhas over recent decades. Bolt-on sustainabilitystrategies and programs will not see companiessafely to the other side. Rather, companies willhave to tackle existential issues head-on —transforming their business models, adaptingtheir operations and adjusting portfolios. Thesustainability transformation can bring historiccommercial upside for companies that areprepared to take decisive and purposeful action, and serious disruption for those that are not. Thereare no guarantees for today’s vested interests oryesterday’s leaders. Across markets, competitivepositioning will look very different 10 or even 5years from now.
