Research Brief: 2025 Indicators of Progress for Advancing Health Globally: Markers and MetricsAvailable from www.iqviainstitute.org 233344891015171819357101214161821 The outlook for advancing healthcare globally in 2025provides grounds for cautious optimism. The world isfinally fully out from under the burden of the COVID-19global pandemic, and multiple ongoing efforts byinternational stakeholders point to opportunities for realprogress with programs that will benefit health systemsand populations around the world, and the scientificevidence to support such efforts is robust. Yet, thereare also potential threats from the emergence of newdiseases, macro-economic and geo-political stress points, and many other longstanding issues that inhibit theadvancement of health globally and remain unresolved. In this research brief, we look at a select few of themany opportunities and challenges, consider theefforts underway to improve health and advance healthoutcomes, and identify seven key indicators we willbe watching to monitor whether advances are beingmade globally during the course of 2025. These are notpredictions of what will happen, but rather some specificmeasurable markers of progress that we will be able toreview at the end of this year. Some of these markersare proxies for outcomes that are difficult to measureon a timely basis, and some are indirect indicators ofprogress. Nevertheless, establishing a set of objectivemetrics by which all stakeholders can assess progressis useful, especially in the face of great opportunity anduncertainty in the year ahead. While many advances inhealthcare take multiple years or decades to achieve, the one-year horizon used here is a reminder of theurgency associated with human health, the importanceof milestones along a longer-term journey, and reinforcesthe accountability of stakeholders to deliver progress inthe short-term even when the final goal may take manyyears to achieve.1.Rebuilding trust in healthcare and science: Theloss of trust in science and healthcare institutions andprofessionals over the past five years has introduceda new set of challenges for the advancement ofhealthcare globally. Restoration of the level of publicOverview confidence is foundational to improving the operationand impact of health systems. One measure ofprogress in 2025 will be an increase in the proportionof adults reporting “a lot” of trust in physiciansand hospitals to at least 50%, up from 40% at thebeginning of 2024. Another will be a reversal of thedownward trend in the proportion of people whobelieve science has a positive impact on society.2.Advancing universal healthcare coverage: Withonly five years remaining to achieve the UnitedNations’ Sustainable Development Goals, includingachievement of Universal Health Coverage, muchwork remains to be done. Even if the goals are notfully achieved, advancing toward them will bringbenefits to individuals and populations around theworld. This requires the reset that has been underwaysince the ending of the
