However, it’sundeniable that there remain barriers to morewidespread adoption, chiefly due to the slower-than-expected rollout of playback and decodingsupport. H.264/AVC remains the dominantcodec, but it’s clear that there’s a trend towardnext-generation codecs, which are just slowerthan anticipated. the number of respondents is lower comparedto previous years. We decided to produce thereport because we had enough respondentsto produce a report representative of theindustry. But we need to rethink our approach togathering insights. Don’t worry, we will alwaysproduce the Video Developer Report, but nextyear’s may look a little different — stay tuned! them AI. We don’t want a market flooded withgimmicks; we want ground-breaking technologythat meets customer needs. This year’s reportprovides a good barometer for where there aremarket needs for AI, with audio transcription andspeech-to-text topping the poll. This year’s report shows an intriguing landscapefor the media and entertainment technologyindustry. There’s a real appetite for innovationand monetizing content, which will support theindustry’s growth. It’s been a challenging coupleof years, but as ever, I remain hopeful we’llregain momentum. Looking specifically at the results betweenour 1st and 8th Video Developer Report, in2017, delivering playback to all devices toppedthe list, but now it’s ad insertion. Deliveringplayback on all devices remains a big challengefor the industry, which isn’t surprising given theenormous number of devices and platforms. However, it is clear the industry’s top priorityis monetizing content more effectively with adtech, which can be attributed to the huge spikein AVOD and FAST business models. Back in2017, SVOD was still the dominant businessmodel, and it was 3 years before Netflix doubleddown on never having adverts on its servicebefore eventually launching them in 2022! However, one of the most striking differencesbetween the reports is the topic of sustainability, which remains a big topic, but commitmentto making the industry more sustainablehas waned. The media and entertainmenttechnology industry has had to battlechallenging macroeconomic conditions, andit’s slid down the list of business priorities. Thisyear’s report found that 70% of respondentssaid they are not prioritizing sustainability, withalmost 45% saying cost is the main driver ofdecisions. I’ll sign off by saying thank you to everyone whocompleted the survey and provided invaluableinsights that are the foundation of the report - itwouldn’t be in its eighth year without you! Also, ahuge thank you to every Bitmover who’s workedon the past and present reports. A lot of workgoes into it and I am always in awe at the result.Last but not least, thank you for reading thisreport. You are why we produce it each year, and we hope it continues to be a valuableresource for you. Welcome Welcome to the 8th edition of Bitmovin’s AnnualVideo Developer Report! I can’t believe we havebeen running this report since 2017. It’s beena true honor and privilege to deliver it to theindustry every year and provide a snapshotof the current opportunities, challenges, andtrends shaping the future of video streaming. In contrast, AI has become a dominant topic. Iremember having conversations about AI backin 2017, and companies were leveraging AI, butrecent technological advancements have seenit become the hottest topic in tech. I think it’samazing to see AI-driven innovations, especiallyif they will help fuel growth in the industry. However, I am concerned that we risk seeingcompanies pumping out solutions and labeling Something else I noticed on the encoding sidewas the continued support for AV1. Even in2017, there was interest in adopting AV1, butit hasn’t translated into widespread adoption. At Bitmovin, we are huge supporters of AV1because of its compression performance thatcan achieve the same visual quality using I recently reread our very first Video DeveloperReport to see how far we, as an industry, havecome. When comparing the survey results, Inoticed some striking differences. The firstwas the number of respondents. This year, S T E F A NL E D E
