F O R E W O R D We are witnessing a pivotal moment in the evolution of developmentand engineering. It is increasingly challenging for companies to dealwith the pervasive complexity that modern innovation requires. Inparticular, the rapid adoption of AI is proving to be a paradigm shiftin how ideas are conceived, systems are designed, and solutions aredelivered. The value to be captured due to productivity gains and moreoptimal ways of working is huge. Yet the path to truly harnessing AI andembedding it consistently in work processes remains unclear, and levelof maturity in terms of adoption is low. The challenge is not just aboutadding some new tools, but about systematically reshaping the veryfoundations of how organizations create value from innovation. This Report, the result of a collaboration between Arthur D. Little (ADL)and our partners — NAE (Netherlands Academy of Engineering), IVA (RoyalSwedish Academy of Engineering Sciences), and KIVI (Koninklijk Instituutvan Ingenieurs) — offers a roadmap for this transformation. With insightsdrawn from over 900 AI and technology use cases, as well as input fromleading companies across six industries, it captures the practical stepsnecessary to move beyond experimentation to scalable and meaningfulAI integration. The findings are clear: the potential of AI is vast, but its true impact oftenlies not in the technology itself, but in the people who wield it. Successrequires balancing technical mastery with a broader ability to integrateknowledge and systems. It also calls for a cultural shift — one thatfosters collaboration, trust, and awillingness to reimagine traditionalapproaches. We present this Report not just as an analysis, but asan invitation totake action. For leaders in development and engineering, the stakes aresimply too high to delay. Together, we can shape a future where AI drivesnot only innovation and productivity but also resilience, adaptability, andsustainability in the face of ever-evolving challenges. Many companiesface an urgent need to evolve from product-centric approaches todelivering smart, functionalized system solutions. The challengesare significant, particularly for companies engaged in complexsystem engineering and manufacturing. They include pervasivecomplexity, skills gaps, and limited access to suitable data. Theopportunities are equally substantial: according to a recent ArthurD. Little (ADL) study, overcoming these hurdles could doublegrowth and productivity prospects and triple profitability for someorganizations by 2030. These are opportunities no company canafford to ignore, especially in light of continued poor productivityin many regions, including Europe.1Companies that fail to act risklosing their key source of differentiation andcompetitiveness. THE ROLE OF AI & RELATED TECHNOLOGIES AI stands out as the most powerful technology for addressingthese challenges, especially when combined with advanced datamanagement and other complementary technologies. System thinking, design thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration will also benecessary for development. However, the journey toward AI maturityis still in its infancy. In the ADL study, only 15% of surveyed companiesreport mastery in applying AI to development and engineering, with more than half having merely initiated pilot projects. Primaryobstacles include lack of AI capabilities, appropriate mindsets, andhigh-quality data. Another potential bottleneck is limited trust in AI’sreliability, explainability, and security. The path forward requires carefulimplementation of tailored AI solutions designed to address the mostimpactful development and engineering challenges. User adoption atscale iscritical to fully realizing AI’s potential. A DELICATE BALANCING ACT:THE PATH TO SUCCESS Harnessing AI’s potential involves
