It is encouraging to observe that India’s overall solid waste treatment capacity sawa steep rise from 18 percent in 2014 to 70 percent in 2021. Over the past six years, the CentralGovernment, State Governments, urban local bodies, and most importantly, the citizens of thecountry have shown remarkable coordination and dedication for Swachhta like never seen before. The Swachh Bharat Mission received acclaim from around the globe for its impressive measurableresults achieved within a short period. However, while Swachhta is a continuous journey, we as anation need to move towards stricter implementation of the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle concept. While urbanisation enables greater economic development in the country, the stress on urban localbodies to deliver efficient urban services, including efficient urban waste management, remainsone of the significant challenges. It is towards meeting these challenges that NITI Aayog hasjoined hands with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to lay down ideas in theform of a comprehensive handbook: ‘NITI Aayog-UNDP Handbook on Sustainable Urban PlasticWaste Management’can be adopted by urban local bodies to good effect. To that end, this handbook aims to enable the capacity building of officials in urban local bodiesand other relevant stakeholders at the city level on plastic waste management. The learningsdocumented here are based on multiple models, which reflect socially and financially inclusiveapproaches towards plastic waste management in India. The handbook also discusses national and international case studies across different componentsof plastic waste management. The represented models have focused on the sustainability andscalability of approaches in all Indian cities based on specific estimated parameters. I am hopefulthat the handbook will act as an essential knowledge resource for stakeholders in the wastemanagement sector. I am also sure that this handbook will go a long way in achieving the broad objectives set out inthe Swachh Bharat Mission. I compliment the UNDP team and the Managing Urbanization verticalat NITI Aayog led by Special Secretary, Dr K. Rajeswara Rao for conceptualizing and publishing thishandbook. His team comprising Deputy Advisor, Dr Biswanath Bishoi, and Young Professional, MrDhiraj Santdasani also deserve due recognition for their efforts.
