FOREWORD Last year, we published the first Tech.co annual report, shininga light on the tech advancements that were aiding, and ailing, businesses across the US. Of these, there’s no doubt that theone that was proving the most disruptive was AI. We’ve gauged the mood on RTO mandates in 2025,asking industry leaders what their future plans are,and uncovering the real reasons why so many aredown on home working. To me, the most surprisingreason given for the pushback against remote workisn’t profits or productivity, but employee wellbeing. In the year since, the discourse around AI has evolved, and it has gone from an emergent technology toone that is as common in the work environment asemail or PowerPoint. Even if you’re not reaching forChatGPT on a daily basis, there’s no doubt that thetools you are using will have AI components underthe hood. AI has filled the headlines over the pastyear, and not always in a positive way: concernsabout millions of workers being replaced by AI, moraland legal questions about the way the platforms aretrained on private and commercial data, and troubleat the top for the companies that are leading thecharge in the industry. But for all this negative discourse, what effect hasAI actually had on businesses? As you’ll see in thisreport, the news is largely positive, although as withany new technology, there is still a lot that companiescan learn. While AI is central to current workplacetrends, we look beyond it, too. Then there’s a topic that I believe will be the next‘big one’ - the ‘four-day’ work week. The ‘five-day’work week was popularized by Henry Ford just over ahundred years ago, is it now time for the next logicalstep for workers? We asked business leaders how likely this might be… Another hot topic for businesses in the last year hasbeen return-to-office (RTO) mandates, with the likesof Amazon and Dell requiring some teams to comeback in for a full ‘five-day’ week. To say the move hasbeen divisive is an understatement, with employeeanger culminating in walkouts and resignations. With over 1,000 US businesses consulted, whatfollows is a detailed analysis of how technology isworking across industries, how it isn’t, and wherewe’re heading. Jack TurnerEditor, Tech.co METHODOLOGY We surveyed companies with 10 or more employees, across a range of industries, to ensure that ourdata captured the experiences and perspectivesof individuals holding key leadership roles withinestablished organizations. We surveyed 1,036 US-based senior executives (e.g. directors, department heads) and workplace managers of businesses with10+ employees, across a range of industries, to ensure that ourdata captured the experiences and perspectives of individualsholding key leadership roles within established organizations. To ensure an impartial and unbiased sample, thisreport’s data was gathered through a survey withparticipants selected via a third-party panelprovider, in September 2024. THEIMPACTOF TECHON THEWORKPLACE. CHAPTER 1. How is technology helpingbusinesses grow? HOW IS TECHNOLOGYHELPINGBUSINESSES GROW? In the last year, the relationship between technologyand business has gone from strength to strength, with theoverwhelming majority of business leaders acknowledgingthe integral role it plays in their companies. This can partly be explained by the groundswell of AIactivity that has exploded over the last 12 months. In2023, the majority of US businesses were not usingAI, or were only using it to a limited extent; today, the opposite is true, with the number of businessesreporting extensive AI use shooting up by 12%. Continuous growth AI skills Importance The percentage of senior leaders who thinkthat AI skills are “extremely important” hasdoubled in a year (from 11% to 22%). 88% of business leaders recognize the pivotalrole of technology in boosting productivity. 27% of US businesses state that theiroperations department has seen the mostgrowth due to new technology. ROI Market leader Investing Nearly 44% of businesses reported “very high”or “high” returns on investment from their AIinitiatives. Microsoft made significant gains (39%increase) but ChatGPT remains the go-to forbusinesses (used by 73% of businesses). Almost 10% of AI-using businesses arespending over $500,000 on AI per year.
