The resultsare surprising. Yes, tech companies perform well. Butrepresentatives from financial services, telecoms, consumer goods, and the energy sector all makeappearances near the top. Understanding the AI landscape: Currenttrends and challenges in AI adoption How much will the application of artificial intelligence(AI) change your organization over the next 12 or 36months? According to Gartner’s 2025 predictions,by next year, 20% of organizations will use AI toflatten their structure, eliminating more than half ofcurrent middle-management positions, and within fouryears, one in 10 global boards will use AI guidanceto challenge executive decisions that are of centralimportance to their business. Look at your companytoday: who you are, and how you make decisions, willshift dramatically in the next few years. These organizations are implementing AI solutions, each in their own way and for their own reasons, butmost importantly, they are all making progress. If youare a business leader, you have probably come toaccept that AI is going to revolutionize many aspectsof your work and personal life. However, you may beuncertain how to build a strategy to harness AI to itsfull advantage. You may be nervous about being leftbehind. Combined with our AI Maturity Index, this whitepaper aims to demonstrate what good looks like andprovide a roadmap for effective deployment of AI. The adoption of generative AI (GenAI), in particular, represents a pivotal moment, with the potential totransform business as much as the advent of theinternet. But along with this potential to reimaginehow we work, create, and solve problems comes asignificant responsibility for the humans using thesetools to wield them in a way that benefits society. Asthe technology matures, some existing problems, such as data bias, will likely diminish. But others willarise. For example, the rapid adoption of AI comes atan environmental cost: a report from the US EnergyDepartment last year found that AI may increase theportion of the nation’s electricity supply consumedby data centers from 4.4% to 12% by 2028in the USalone. To meet this demand, the report suggested, some power plants are expected to burn more coal andnatural gas. Making the best investment Many are optimistic about the ROI of AI. For every$1 companies invest in AI, they are realizing anaverage of $3.5 in return, according to arecent studyconducted by IDC, and sponsored by Microsoft, withfinancial services, media, and telco having the highestdemonstrated ROI… so far. The study found that onein 20 organizations worldwide realized an impressive$8 in return. Morgan Stanley Research estimatesthat AI-driven productivity could add 30 basis pointsto 2025 net margins for members of the S&P 500.Others are far more conservative in their predictions:a mid-2025 survey by Boston Consulting Groupfound that for AI investments in the finance function, median ROI hovered at just 10%, with one-third ofleaders surveyed reporting limited or no gains. Value creation across industries At IMD, we have seen a huge upswing in theoperationalization of AI designed for autonomy; agenticAI in business goes beyond automating tasks, as wehave seen in industrial AI for more than a decade; nowit is building systems that manage and optimize wholebusiness functions on their own. And yet, while ROI may vary, it is clear that firmsare racing to invest: Gartner has predicted thatworldwide GenAI spending could reach $644bn in2025, a massive increase of 76.4% from 2024. Andtimelines are shrinking: two in five organizationshave implementation times of less than six months, according to the IDC study. These are high-stakesinvestments at speed. In healthcare, AI is used in diagnostics, personalizedtreatment, drug discovery, and development. AI isdeployed across financial services to reduce fraud, enhance security, and customize financial adviceand services. If autonomous vehicles aren’t yet thenorm in log
