The retailer is reportedly holding “discreet talks” with several Europeanretailers, including Lidl, Esselunga and Conad. Italy is the fourth largest country in Europe forthe retailer, but it is adifficultand highly fragmented market in which Carrefour has only theeighth largest market share – although it is in a stronger position in the north of the country.Carrefour’s sales in Italy fell by almost 5% in 2024, representing 4.4% of group sales (vs 5.9% in2020). Carrefour stated in February that it was undertaking a strategic review – buying out itsminorities in Brazil and selling a further stake in Carmila are two concrete actions so far.^ Carrefour acquires five MyAuchan stores.Carrefour acquired five MyAuchan ultra-convenience stores from Auchan Retail International S.A. on 12 June 2025. This transactionincludes the acquisition of four stores in Paris from the Auchan group and a franchised store inAsnières, all previously operated under the MyAuchan brand.^ UK GLP-1 penetration rising and users cutting back.On Friday The Grocer published theresults of a Kantar Worldpanel survey of nearly 12,000 UK households on the impact of GLP-1 onfood and drink consumption. The share of UK households with at least one GLP-1 user hasnearly doubled in the past year – from 2.3% to 4.1% of households – and those households arereducing their grocery bills by 2.2ppts more than non-users. Two-thirds (64%) said they weresnacking less, 23% had cut back on alcohol consumption, and others were scaling back onindulgent treats such as pizza (63%) and takeaways (74%). “We’re also seeing categories likepeanut butter beingaffectedbecause they rely on these heavier ‘host’ foods that people maydrop,” says Kennaugh. “So, this isn’t justaffectingthe categories you’d think of, it’s wider.”^ BDO high street sales tracker.BDO’s high street sales tracker showed that Total UK LFL retailsales increased by +1.8% in the week ending 8 June 2025 (vs 4w average +0.2%), according tothe BDO High Street Sales Tracker (>85 contributing retailers, ~10,000 stores, discretionary).CHANNEL– Store LFLs +1.6% (vs 4w average +0.6x%) and Online LFLs +6.4% (vs 4w average+2.0%). CATEGORY - Lifestyle LFLs +3.4x% (vs 4w average +1.3%), Fashion LFLs +0.7% (vs 4waverage -0.8%) and Homewares LFLs +1.3% (vs 4w average -0.0%). Within the +1.6% increase inStore LFL sales: Lifestyle +4.1%, Fashion +0.2%, and Homewares -3.1%. WEATHER - This weekexperienced showery and blustery weather with dry patches and some brightness in southern parts. During the same week last year, the weather was dry but cooler and overcast withoccasional rain.
