Report|ITTrends 2024:Industry Report|3Whether the topic is managed service providers (MSPs) and howthey can ensure quality of service to their clients, or an internal ITdepartment and their challenge to do more with the limited toolsand team members available, automation can contribute to abetter end-user experience.Another highlight from the data inside this report comes fromthe topic of internal visibility for manager roles and above. Itbecomes apparent in the results that there is a gap between theexperiences of IT operations personnel on the front lines andwhat their management perceives. What can be done to bringteams and their leadership into alignment? We’ll draw furtherconclusions on this topic and make recommendationsthroughout the report. For now, consider the impact of the tools your organization usesfor front-line IT employees. Do those tools help or hinder howemployees deliver the expected end-user experience? In a timewhen budgets can be tight, when talent is hard to find, and toolsprawl can stretch as far as 20+ network related applications and500+ SaaS programs in inventory, automating even a portion ofthe manual labor currently on technicians’ plates can createchange. In fact, we might go so far as to say you can’t affordnotto be thinking about automation. Methodology &FirmographicsThis report presents the results from an online survey that wasconducted on behalf of Auvik Networks and was completed by2,100 IT professionals. The survey was fielded in Q4 of 2023. Theobjective of this survey was to examine the evolving roles of ITprofessionals and departments, including their reportingstructure, top strategies, time management practices, andongoing challenges. The survey also looked at what technology IT professionals areusing to both manage day-to-day operations and prepare forfuture needs. We compared data against trends seen in 2023, tohighlight what’s changed, what’s stayed the same and whatcould be on the horizon. The survey includes respondents fromManaged Service Providers (MSPs) and internal IT teams. There isa +/- 2% Margin of Error at 95% confidence.US84%Mexico7%Canada3%UK2.5%Spain1.5% Report|ITTrends 2024:Industry ReportRemote, hybrid, and on-siteworking modelsMSP30%Internal IT70%100% Remote / Distributed7%80% Remote / 20% Distributed23%20% Remote / 80% Distributed21%100% On-site10%50% Remote / 50% Distributed40%Mix of internal IT vs.managed service provider (MSP) ROW2% Report|ITTrends 2024:Industry ReportInternal IT team response breakdownRole in IT251–50016%501–100031%1001–500036%5000+9%1–2508%IT or Operations Manager43%VP or Director22%CEO/CIO/CTO/COO36%User15%Number of employees MSP response breakdownNumber of employeesRole distributionVP or Director25%Operations Manager25%Network Practitioner(administrator or engineer)3%Helpdesk/Service Desk Manager or Technician2%Systems Administrator2%Owner/Operator6%CEO/CIO/CTO/COO36%51–1009%201–50033%500+39%1–504%MSP response breakdownNumber of employeesRole distributionVP or Director25%Operations Manager25%Network Practitioner(administrator or engineer)3%Helpdesk/Service Desk Manager or Technician2%Systems Administrator2%Owner/Operator6%CEO/CIO/CTO/COO36%51–1009%201–50033%500+39%1–504% Number of IT employees1–55%6–1012%11–2032%21–5038%50+13%Internal IT team response breakdown [cont.] 01 The Modern NetworkSection1Network homogenizationThe majority of respondents in this year’s report (69%) describetheir client’s networks as either fully or mostly homogenized, meaning most devices are made by the same vendor.Worth considering also is the significant number of MSPs (17%)who say their clients’ networks are composed of several differentvendors. In industries like government and utilities/energy,internal IT teams also report that their organization’s networkcomposition is mixed (51% and 52% respectively).69%ofrespondentsdescribetheirclient’snetworksfullyor mostlyhomogenized 17%ofMSPs say theirclient’snetworksarecomposed ofseveraldifferentvendors ReportTool sprawlMost (44%) of IT professionals are working with at least 10 or morenetwork-related tools in their organization. Of governmentrespondents, 44% reported using more than 20 network-relatedtools. This is an alarming amount of tool-sprawl, especiallyconsidering there are tools that exist specifically to mitigate thenumber of tools an IT professional needs to manage networks.Number of network-related tools10–2041% |ITTrends 2024:Industry Report|8organizations are using20+15%1–37%4–1037% Remote readinessRemote readiness has been an important topic in the researchfor this report in past years.
