Foreword Driven by the end of pandemic-related restrictionsand robust pent-up demand, global internationaltourist arrivals are expected to reach pre-pandemiclevels in 2024, highlighting the resiliency of the Traveland Tourism (T&T) sector and people’s strong desireto travel. However, the recovery has not been withoutits challenges. Uneven regional and market-segmentrecoveries, labour shortages and supply anddemand imbalances have all characterized the pastfew years of T&T development. Meanwhile, externalmacroeconomic, geopolitical and environmentalfactors such as high rates of global inflation andinterest rates, conflicts in Europe and the MiddleEast and wildfires in destinations such as Greecehave generated additional pressure on the sector. In the coming years, the impact of climate change, geopolitical tensions, macroeconomic uncertaintyand the application of new digital technologies suchas artificial intelligence (AI) represent just some ofthe challenges facing T&T and the broader globalcommunity. Within this context, it has become criticalfor T&T decision-makers and stakeholders not just tofocus on improving sector readiness for future risksand opportunities, but also to ensure that the sectoraccounts for its economic, social and environmentalimpact and is a driver of global prosperity. it faces as it moves past the COVID-19 pandemic.Furthermore, the publication’s special focus sectionuses index results and other research to provide ahigh-level overview of the likely future global risksand challenges landscape and looks at how thesector could help to address elements such aseconomic inequality, environmental threats linkedto climate change and pollution, technologicalinnovation and global connectivity. We emphasizethat to achieve this potential, public- and private-sector leaders and other key stakeholders need toproactively shape T&T to become more resilient, inclusive and sustainable. Francisco BettiHead, Global IndustriesTeam; Member of theExecutive Committee,World Economic Forum Following the World Economic Forum’smultistakeholder approach, this report is based ona thought leadership and research collaborationbetween the Forum and the University of Surrey.Through this new knowledge partnership, we havebeen able to make several upgrades to the TTDI,including the addition of new index componentsand data that allow for better coverage of theT&T sector’s environmental and socioeconomicimpact, while making it more T&T-specific, conciseand consistent in economy coverage. This workcould not have been done without the valuableinput of a network of distinguished thinkers andpractitioners who provided their knowledge andinsights.
