The brighter wayto light up your city. Verizon Intelligent Lighting delivers cost savings, whilehelping to maintain safety and improve sustainability and quality of life. Many city leaders are well aware of the cost benefits of LED lights over traditional streetlights. But LEDs alone are an incomplete solution. Lighting control provides additionalcost savings and quality-of-life benefits when used in conjunction with LEDs. Challenges The Intelligent Lighting solution includes threeinteracting components, bundled together LEDs on their own can’t be remotely monitored orcontrolled. With traditional street lighting, regularon-the-street inspections and resident complaintsare the ways to determine if they’re working properly. And both of those can be costly - the formerfinancially and the latter in good will. Lightingcontrol nodes Verizon cellularnetwork Stand-alone LEDs also can’t be dimmed or brightenedremotely. That can waste money and energy, whileleaving residents frustrated with too little or toomuch light. Benefits Making the business case for Intelligent Lighting iseasy, as the solution provides both hard-dollar savingsand enhanced community value when compared toLED-only lighting. And street lights that operate at full intensity allnight can contribute to light pollution, which maydisorient wildlife and negatively impact human sleepand health.2 With the Intelligent Lighting platform, operators canmonitor, manage and optimize street lights remotely,in near real time, minimizing costly truck rolls. To gain the most benefit from their street lighting—while minimizing costs and energy use—cities that aretransitioning to LED lights should implement smartlighting controls. Lights can be controlled individually or by group, andprogrammed to dim, turn on or turn off, accordingto preset definitions. For example, lights can becontrolled to dim in residential areas late at night, when there is limited pedestrian or driver activity, andto brighten during early evening, special events orinclement weather. Solution The Verizon Intelligent Lighting solution transformsstreet lights into smart lights, enabling operatorsto monitor and control them remotely to increaseefficiency, effectiveness and sustainability whiledecreasing costs. The platform also empowers users to check statusinformation in near real time, providing insights intoenergy/power consumption, connectivity status, usage duration and more. Intelligent Lighting converts LED fixtures intosensor-equipped smart devices that capture andtransmit data. The solution connects to the IntelligentLighting Central Management System (CMS) platform,so operators can remotely manage and monitorevery light in the system from a single, user-friendlyinterface. That means operators can fine-tune individual lightsor groups of lights for optimal savings, while providingresidents and visitors with quality lighting when it’smost needed. 1https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/8125542https://www.nps.gov/articles/nocturnal_earthnight.htm Operators also know exactly when and where lightsgo out, which helps them reduce costly andtime-consuming inspections and improve responsetimes. And those quick repairs and replacements canmake for safer streets and better community relations. Other benefits There are other qualitative benefits to IntelligentLighting as well, including: Cost >Positive environmental impact, due to lowerenergy consumption and less light pollution>Better experience for constituents, thanks tomore efficient, sustainable and proactivecity services>Improved lighting uptime, which helps to maintainsafety in neighborhoods and on roadways>The ability to communicate lighting stats withcitizens and city officials>The capability to incorporate the solution intocity dispatch centers, enabling location data forfaster repairs A typical smart lighting control implementation for5,000 street lights would include a one-time chargefor hardware, warranty and activations, along withyearly recurring Software as a Service (SaaS), whichincludes connectivity costs. (Because the systemuses cellular connectivity, there are no field networkdeployment or ongoing network maintenance costs.)In our example, we assumed that the customer isinstalling Light Sense nodes at the same timewhen transitioning to LED luminaries. As such, theinstallation fee is excluded. Intelligent Lighting can help cities reducestreet-lighting energy and management costs through: >Proactive maintenance; fewer costly truckrolls and no more manual inspections>Remote monitoring, management andcontrol>Dimming; reduced burn time and extendedbulb lifetimes>Automatic outage detection Lack of adequate lighting can lead to increases intraffic accidents1and crime.2 For our example, we used 20% energy savings due todimming and a significant reduction in maintenancecosts, eliminating a large percentage of up to$400-per-truck-roll expenses.
