The five-episode series, producedlocally by Telemark, depicts the dramatic events experienced bypassengers and crew at sea, as well as the aftermath on land, asfamilies grappled with the consequences. 2,560Businesses engagedacross Poland Heweliuszis the largest television production in recent Polishhistory and has contributed significantly to economic activityin the country. The projectengaged around 2,560 businessesnationwide. This spending supported economic activity in everyregion in Poland and across a wide range of industries, while alsoindirectly stimulating additional spending by the Polish residentsemployed by the production and its supply chain. 640 Full-time and part-timejobssupported across Poland asa result ofHeweliusz This study, commissioned by the Motion Picture Association(MPA), analyses the production’s total economic impacts inPoland in 2024–2025.1The study also considers the widerbenefits to the Polish economy, such as supporting the localaudiovisual industry. Similar production budgets and spendingpatterns in Poland are likely to produce similar economicimpact results as those presented in this study. PLN78m In 2024–2025,the production ofHeweliuszspentPLN 61.7 millionin Poland, covering a range of expensesincluding the compensation of local production cast andcrew, and goods and services provided by local businesses. Contribution to Poland’sGDP supported by theproduction ofHeweliusz Oxford Economics estimates that, as a result of thisexpenditure, the production ofHeweliuszstimulated aPLN 78 million contribution to Poland’s GDPin 2024–2025.We find that for every PLN 1 million that the production’s ownactivities contributed to the economy, it supported a furtherPLN 1.8 million of activity along its supply chain and throughthe payment of wages. We also find thatHeweliusz’sproduction supported a totalof 640 full-time and part-timejobs in Polandduring theproduction period. For every 100 people the productiondirectly employed, its expenditure supported 47 additionaljobs across the country. This does not include extras thatwere involved in the production. Theseries, produced locally byTelemark, follows the experi-ences of the passengers andcrew as they endured thedisaster, while families on landgrappled with uncovering thetruth about what happened.2The series’ creative teamwas led by acclaimed Polishdirector Jan Holoubek andproducer Anna Kępińska. Heweliuszwas filmedprimarily in Poland (mainlocations Warsaw, Gdynia,Świnoujście) and in a studioin Belgium for some of theunderwater scenes. Productionran from January to August2024, totalling 105 shootingdays, with postproductioncontinuing into 2025. Shows produced with similarbudgets and spendingpatterns in Poland are likelyto produce similar impacts asthose presented in this study. PRODUCTION SPENDING The production ofHeweliuszspent approximatelyPLN 61.7 million across Polandin 2024–2025, including the compensation of local production cast and crew, andgoods and services provided by local businesses. Thisproduction spending directly generated employmentwhilst also boosting business revenue for the localeconomy. As well as providing a direct boost to thePolish economy, this spending also had positive impactfor economic activity and jobs along the supply chain.
