A carbon neutral, resilient and inclusive transformation ofagrifood systems is essential for addressing the climate crisis and securing ajust transition for all. A just transition in agrifood systems must be people-centred and leaveno one behind. It must prioritize the rights, needs and agency of the mostmarginalized and climate-vulnerable people and groups, especially IndigenousPeoples, family farmers, small-scale producers, agricultural workers, womenand youth. A just transition in agrifood systems must be resilient and inclusive, transformational and systemic. It must create sustainable, equitable systemsfor food production, distribution, and consumption that do no harm, addressstructural inequalities, eradicate hunger, malnutrition and poverty, anddeliver co-benefits for the climate, nature and marginalized people. At the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), to be held in Brazil, Parties willhave the opportunity to recognize the critical importance of agrifood systemsand rural communities for a just transition by integrating them into a justtransition decision text. Through their climate action plans Parties can elevate their climate ambitionsby integrating a just transition in agrifood systems, and by mobilizing highquality climate finance to fund a locally led, carbon neutral, resilient andinclusive agrifood systems transformation. climate vulnerability, strengthening climateresilience and catalysing climate-resilientdevelopment for all by taking a whole-of-society and a whole-of-economy approach.14 Introduction Achieving global climate change ambitionsrequires a just transition in agrifood systems.1Global goals on climate change adaptationand climate-resilient development cannotbe achieved with justice and equity withoutsecuring the rights and livelihoods of thealmost 1 billion people who live in poverty andhunger, and amid growing climate pressurein rural areas.2–7Similarly, efforts to addressglobal warming cannot be achieved withoutclosing the mitigation action gap in agrifoodsystems, especially in the commercial andindustrial parts of the sector.8–12A carbonneutral, resilient and inclusive transformationof agrifood systems will help countries deliverthe ambitions of the Paris Agreement in waysthat are fair, equitable and just, avoidingunintended harm and maximizing co-benefits,especially for vulnerable and marginalizedpeople living and working in the agrifoodsystems of developing countries. Agrifood systems should be central to thisapproach, but they are currently a blindspot in just transition policy, planning andfinance. Though some Parties and observershave drawn attention to agriculture andagrifood systems in their submissions to theJTWP,15and while the United Arab Emirates'Declaration on Food and Agriculture affirmedthe need for agrifood systems to urgentlyadapt and transform in response to climatechange,16there has been no formal discussionof how to achieve a just transition in agrifoodsystems at the United Nations FrameworkConvention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). While most countries have recognized in theirnationally determined contributions (NDCs)that climate change is undermining thestability and productivity of agrifood systems– threatening food security, livelihoodsand sustainable development – they alsoacknowledge that agrifood systems are apowerful climate solution. For two years, the United Arab Emirates'Just Transition Work Programme (JTWP) hasexplored policy options for achieving a justtransition.13These discussions have movedthe collective understanding of just transitionbeyond a narrow focus on managing thenegative impacts of low-carbon transitionsfor workers and communities in energy, transport and manufacturing. It now includesa broad understanding of just transitionas an inclusive process that c
