Foreword Pedro Gomez Imran DassuSenior Partner and GlobalLead, Sustainable andResponsible Sourcing,Kearney Head of Industry Agenda,Centre for Nature andClimate; Member of theExecutive Committee,World Economic Forum For years, Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) havefocused primarily on quality, cost and delivery. However, today expectations have evolved – and sohave demands on the procurement function. Supplychains are tested almost daily by geopolitics, economic volatility, extreme weather and more.At the same time, stakeholders are asking harderquestions. Boards, for example, are looking for riskprotection through resilience and transparency, while still seeking progress on both economicreturns and climate goals. Chief executives areunder increasing pressure to act. expert practitioner voices, lessons from leadingorganizations and practical tools to assess whereorganizations stand and what they can do next. TheStages of Excellence Assessment (Chapter 2) helpsidentify what to prioritize and where to focus, whilethe building blocks offer concrete ideas to movefrom ambition to action. However, frameworks alone will not create change.Leadership will. We believe it is imperative to actively discusssustainable procurement with the Chief ExecutiveOfficer (CEO) and the Board – otherwise, progresstowards business and climate goals risks stalling.“Procurement talking to procurement” has alimited runway. The organizations making the mostsignificant progress are those where CPOs havedriven successful change within their function andare now informing strategy, shaping investmentsand helping define what sustainability looks likebeyond procurement alone. Organizations may have little control over globaldisruptions, but they can shape how they respond. In many of these situations, procurement has acritical role to play. Rather than remaining a cost-driven, transactional function, procurement holdsa growing strategic influence over a company’ssuccess – however it is measured. Leveraging procurement to turn sustainabilityambitions into business results is an effectivestrategy. CPOs are central to driving sustainabilitybecause of four unique strengths: their reach acrossmultiple internal teams; their visibility into data onproducts, demand and supply; the relationshipsthey maintain with suppliers; and their credibility asa key function with a seat at the table. Given impending corporate targets and regulatorymilestones, the procurement leaders of today havethe opportunity and duty to shape the future. We have included a brief note below for CEOs,introducing the playbook’s core messages andpurpose. We encourage its broad use to supportconversations with executive leaders – to sparkalignment, secure support, build momentum andhelp strengthen the position of procurement as a keyenabler of any organization’s sustainability journey. When done well, sustainable procurement doesnot compete with growth, but strengthens it. It alsoreduces exposure, unlocks innovation and helpsfuture-proof the business. It is time to move from discussion to impact – andto continue building momentum. We have designed this playbook to supportCPOs and their teams in the transition towardssustainable procurement. The report draws on Note to Chief Executive Officers procurement. Already, many purchasing officeshave made valuable gains, but have a long wayto go. Meeting publicly committed targets andregulatory requirements becomes incrementallyharder and requires whole-organization thinkingand action. Procurement has made progress in promotingsustainability, but meeting organizational andregulatory commitments requires action from abroad span of leaders. Over the past year, the World Economic Forum andKearney have engaged with more than 100 CPOsacross sectors and regions to understand what isworking and what is holding companies back. Thefindings are clear: further progress depends not juston ambition, but also on alignment. Pro
