Mark Muro and Shriya Methkupally Executivesummary Artificial intelligence israpidlytransformingthe U.S.economy.However,regionalcapacities forAItalentdevelopment, research, and enterprise adoption differ dramaticallyacrossthecountry, andpolicymakers havelittle insight onwhere these gaps areemerging. Thenation’sreadiness to benefit from AI is critical becausethe technologyis going toplay asignificant role in economic development given its potential to drive innovation andproductivity in every industry, both in general andwithinregions. Toaddress these issues, this report maps the unfolding AI revolution across387U.S.metropolitan areasandassesseshowthe nation andlocal economies are positioned tocreate, apply, andharnessAI.The reportfirstunderscores AI’simplications fornationalandregional economic development. Then it turnsto a benchmarking exercisethatgroups14 indicators into threedimensionsof regional AI readiness:talent, innovation, andadoption. The“talent”pillarmeasuresthe flow of AI-capable workers;“innovation”captures researchand innovationstrengths;and“adoption”chartsindustryuptake. Employing this framework, thereport groups U.S. metroareas into six tiers of AIeconomicreadiness and,in so doing, illustratesthe geography of AI progress as it variesacross the nation.Continuingapatternfrom a 2021Brookings report,1the major AIcommunity typesrevealed by thenewcluster analysisare: •Superstars:The San Francisco and San Jose, Calif.,metropolitan areas exhibitunmatched strength across all three AIpillars (talent, innovation, and adoption).•StarHubs:Thisgroupof28 metroareasformsa second echelon of uniformlystrong AI ecosystems, balancing top‑tier talent, research, and enterprise uptake.•EmergingCenters:Thisgroup of14 metroareas combinestop performance in twopillars with one developing area.•Focused Movers:These29 metroareas excel in one pillar while maintainingfoundations in the other two.•Nascent Adopters:Thisgroupof 79 metroareas showsmoderate performanceacross all three pillars.•Others:Agroup
