With targets to sustainably manage over 16 million km² of ocean space, empower over 1,000 coastalcommunities, and mobilize $1 billion in ocean finance, the initiative addresses the estimated $1 trillion in annual economic losses fromunsustainable ocean use. Mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefsreduce flood damage, buffer storm surges, and protectcoastal cities, collectively saving over $65 billion in avoideddamages each year. Restoring these ecosystems offers oneof the most cost-effective ways to enhance disasterpreparedness and resilience, particularly for vulnerablecoastal nations.Globally, ocean fisheries contributed at least 17 percent ofthe per capita protein supply from all animal sources toapproximately 3.2 billion people in the last decade. Thisnumber continues to increase, emphasizing that enforcingsustainable fisheries practices is critical to maintaining thebalance of marine ecosystems necessary for ocean healthand human well-being. In Small Island Developing States(SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), the ocean iscentral to food security, economic development, and culturalidentity. However, ocean livelihoods in these nations facemultiple challenges stemming from climate change,biodiversity loss, and economic vulnerability. Furthermore,chemical pollution and plastic waste are pouring into theocean, harming marine life and disrupting its delicateecosystems.Launched in 2022, the Ocean Promise championssustainable, equitable ocean livelihoods through integratedstrong ocean governance, private sector investment, andgrowing local capacity for long-term ocean stewardship andautonomy.
