From artificial intelligence(AI) and quantum computing to biotechnology andadvanced materials, this concurrent movement oftechnologies is reshaping industries and solvingproblems once thought impossible. Whether thesteam engine, electricity, the computer or even theinternet, technological progress has traditionallybeen framed through the lens of individualbreakthroughs. However, today’s complexitiesnecessitate moving to a systems-thinking approach.Technological progress has historicallybeen framed through the lens of individualbreakthroughs, though, as W. Brian Arthurobserved inThe Nature of Technology, innovationsrarely evolve in isolation. Rather, they emerge fromcombinations of existing technologies to createnew possibilities that themselves become buildingblocks for further innovation. This systems-based understanding of innovation, when layered with the World Economic Forum’sglobal multistakeholder perspective andCapgemini’s practical applied insights, led tothe development of the3C Framework. Thisframework captures how technologies evolvethrough stages of combination, convergenceand compounding in a network-based view thathelps organizations identify and capture value attechnological intersections.Aiman EzzatChief Executive Officer,CapgeminiJeremy JurgensManaging Director, Centre forthe Fourth Industrial Revolution,World Economic ForumForeword The insights in this report draw from both qualitativeand quantitative sources. The TechnologyConvergence Community, composed of subjectmatter experts from the Forum’s global networkof business, academia, civil society, public sectorleaders, provided domain expertise and caseexamples. This was complemented by Capgemini’sglobal survey of 2,000 senior executives across18 countries, 10 industries and five continents, offering a comprehensive view of convergencepatterns and organizational readiness. Together, these insights were cross-referenced withexamples of industry transformation and real-world case studies to uncover the implicationsof convergence for the future of innovation, competitiveness and policy planning. As economic, societal and climate urgencies grow, decision-makers must adopt a full-spectrum approach toinnovation that moves beyond segmented thinkingand embraces the thoughtful combination ofmultiple technological capabilities. Recognizinghow intersectional technologies give rise tonew industries, business models and economicparadigms is essential not only for navigating thisrapidly changing environment but also for unlockingnew pathways of value creation. By illuminatingthese technological interdependencies and theirbusiness implications, this collaboration aims toequip leaders with the foresight needed to navigateconvergence strategically.Cathy LiHead, AI, Data and Metaverse;Member of the Executive Committee,World Economic ForumTechnology Convergence Report 3 Executive summaryThe World Economic Forum has developedthe 3C Framework, which reveals the patternsdriving innovation transformation. It provides amap for navigating today’s tech explosion, wherebreakthroughs don’t stand alone but mergeto reshape markets.Multiple foundational technologiesare maturing simultaneously, creatingunprecedented opportunities for thosewho understand their combined potential. In the context of this framework, this reportexamines how eight powerful technology domains– artificial intelligence (AI), omni computing, engineering biology, robotics, advanced materials, spatial intelligence, quantum and next-generation(next-gen) energies – are combining to create valuethat no single innovation could deliver alone.A total of 238 technology subcomp
