SHAPING EUROPE’SDIGITAL FUTURE February 2020#DigitalEU Digital technologies are crucial for the EU to become climate neutral by2050, the goal set in the European Green Deal. The power ofdata Mobility andtransport Energynetworks Smartbuildings Reducing the carbon footprint of the ICT sector But at the same timetechnologies could help: Today the ICT sectoraccounts for: reduce emission by7timesmore than the amount createdby the ICT sector;reduceglobal emissions byupto 15%. 5-9%of electricity use more than2%of globalgreenhouse gas emissions(as much as all air traffic). Artificial Intelligence, supercomputing and pooled datawill allow better analysis and decision-making onclimate crisis and the environment. This will lead tobetter policy making. If unchecked, the ICTfootprint couldincrease to14%of global emissionsby 2040. The digital strategy will help the European GreenDeal make the EU climate neutral Launch a new EU industrial strategy In March 2020, the Commission will adopt anEU industrial strategyto support the green and digital transformation of the EU economy. Boost the EU’s ability to predict andmanage environmental disasters The“Destination Earth” initiativewill develop a high precisiondigital model (a ‘digital twin’) of the Earth that will radicallyimprove Europe’s ability to predict extreme weather patterns, gauge the impact of climate change and manage natural andenvironmental disasters. 3Support the circular economy Take measures to improve theenergy efficiencyandcircular economyperformance of the ICT sector from broadband networks to data centresand ICT devices; Introduce new “product passports” to tell consumers and industry about the origin, composition (including hazardous and rare materials), end-of-life handlingand recycling of products. Launch a circular electronics initiative Improve rules to make devices last longer and make themeasier to repair and recycle. Extending the lifetimeof all smartphonesin the EU by one year would save2.1 milliontonnes of CO₂ per year by 2030, theequivalent of taking a million cars off the roads. Consumer supportis strong. A recent Eurobarometer survey showsthat64%of users would like to keeptheir digital devices for5-10 years. Make data centres and ICTinfrastructures climate-neutral by2030 Ensure they become more energy efficient and use morerenewable energy sources. Take advantage of ArtificialIntelligence, 5G, cloud and edgecomputing, and the Internet ofThings Make sure we use digital technologies betterto deal with climate change andprotectthe environment. Support automated andconnected transport Develop smart systemsto reducetraffic congestion and improvemobility. Make public procurement moresustainable Ensure that EU rules ongreen public procurementcoverall ICT products and services. Reuse is authorised provided the source is acknowledged.
