© Oliver WymanKEY RESULTSOF THE STUDY Digital health technologies arecurrentlyinthe accelerationphase–start-up funding is10xup vs. 2015, new technologiesare being tested (e.g.,non-invasive glucosemeasurements), >80%ofconsumers interested.Personal healthgoes far beyondstep tracking or blood pressure–esp. moreadvanced physicalmeasuressuch as skin analysisand body composition are fastgaining popularity. As penetration rates (tracking4+ metrics) are especially highamong young and seniorconsumers and many tools arejust recently gaining traction, penetration will likely go upfrom ca. 50% to 70%in thenext10 years. For largeconsumer and medicaltechnology brands, there is aclear chance to win in thismarket–asconsumers trustthem far more(50-60%) thanthe start-ups currently drivingthe market (32%). Many consumers already track4 or moreof their personalhealth metrics–led by Chinaand the US (67%, 60%) vs.Germany and UK (44%, 45%),independently of gender andmedical situation.Consumers still have concernsabout digital health tools–largely focused aroundreliability, data trustworthinessand the quality of personalizedadvice. Conducted in August 2023, the studysurveyed 4,000 consumers online inGermany, UK, USA, and China.JOINT STUDY BY GFUAND OLIVER WYMAN© Oliver Wyman © Oliver WymanPERSONAL HEALTH TECH MEASURES ANDTRACKS BODY METRICS AND ACTIVITIES•Mental health•Mindfulness and meditation•Sleep quality•HormonesPsychological tracking•Skin analysis/mole detection•Intake of medication•Urine/stool analysis•Emergency detection (e.g.,falls)Medical tracking•Water intake•Food and nutrition intake•Fitness tracking/step counting•OvulationLifestyle tracking•Blood oxygen saturation•Blood glucose•Blood pressure•Body compositionPhysical tracking © Oliver WymanSource: Crunchbase; Oliver Wyman analysis1333745066178031,0831,1752015201620172018201920202021Annual funding of “personal health” start-ups, global, 2015-23E$ BN# of funding rounds2703501031382206826© Oliver WymanTECHNOLOGIES ARE IN ACCELERATION PHASEInvestments are being poured into start-ups © Oliver WymanALSO ESTABLISHEDPLAYERS MOVE(FURTHER) INTOPERSONAL HEALTHSource:NotebookCheck:Honor reveals the Earbuds 3 pro with temperature monitoring features; The Tech Advocate:Apple Watch Series 9rumors: Will it get a blood glucose monitor?;9to5Google:Ahead of Pixel Watch 2, Google explains how Fitbit’scEDAstress trackingsensor works; The Verge:Withingswants you to pee on its latest device; The Verge:Samsung teases better sleep, fitness and safety features for its next GalaxyWatch; The Register:This won’t hurt a bit: Amazon now a US healthcare provider “Honor reveals theEarbuds 3 pro withtemperature monitoringfeatures”“Withingswants you topee on its latest device” “Ahead of Pixel Watch 2,Google explains howFitbit’scEDAstresstracking sensor works”“This won’t hurt a bit:Amazon now a UShealthcare provider” “Apple Watch Series 9rumors: Will it get a bloodglucose monitor?”“Samsung teases bettersleep, fitness and safetyfeatures for its nextGalaxyWatch” © Oliver WymanGermanyUnited KingdomUSA44%45%60%A LARGE SHARE OF CONSUMERS TRACK THEIR PERSONAL HEALTHShare of consumers actively tracking at least 4 health metrics © Oliver WymanSource: Oliver Wyman Consumer Survey 2023, n=4,000SexWoman54%Man53%Chronic diseasesNo chronic disease53%Chronic disease54%LifestyleVery healthy lifestyle66%Rather unhealthy lifestyle33%PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUNDS USE PERSONAL HEALTHShare of consumers actively tracking at least 4 health metrics © Oliver WymanSource: Oliver Wyman Consumer Survey 2023, n=4,000Penetration will likely growcloseto 70% in the next10 yearsTHIS INCLUDESESPECIALLYMILLENNIALS AND65+ GENERATION © Oliver WymanSource: Oliver Wyman Consumer Survey 2023, n=4,000EMERGING AREAS AREESPECIALLY AROUNDDEEP PHYSICAL ANDMEDICAL TRACKING © Oliver WymanLess usageDIFFERENT CULTURAL TASTE ON “HOW” TO TRACKGermans prefer a separate device, while in China smartphones and smartwatches are morepopularCultural differences in device useSmartphoneSeparate, dedicated deviceSmartwatchSource: Oliver Wyman Consumer Survey 2023, n=4,000 High usage © Oliver WymanKEY CONCERNS AGAINST PERSONAL HEALTH ARE ROOTED IN A MIS-TRUST AGAINSTRELIANCE ON TECHNOLOGYTop 3 concerns users have regarding digital health toolsLack of regulatorycompliance and protectionof user rights and dataLack of human interactionand personalized careMis-trust towards qualityof measurement comparedto professional advise53%48%45%Source: Oliver Wyman Consumer Survey 2023, n=4,000 © Oliver WymanIt’s good to move forward withtechnology but Istill preferpersonal advise from myfamilydoctor. It’s great and helpful to checkyour own health independentlyand see an expert just in case.Generally, I think that apps totrackpersonal health should bemore transparent about notmisusing personal data;especially for theoldergeneration.CONSUMER SENTIMENT SHOWS BRANDS NEED TO BUILD TRUSTSource: Oliver Wyman Consumer Survey 2023, n=4,000 Having my watch count my stepsis a fu
