We’re also finding new and better ways to get Apple products intopeople’s hands. It’s not just trains, planes, and automobiles —increasingly, we’re shipping Apple products on the open seas, because ocean freight can reduce emissions by as much as95 percentcompared to air transport. And we continue to restoreour planet’s ecosystems — like the Atlantic Forest, which stretchesfrom Brazil to Paraguay — that play a key role in removing carbonfromtheatmosphere. That’s why we’re partnering directly with communities and localorganizations to support environmental solutions where they’reneeded most. In 2023, that meant expanding our Power for Impactprogram to bring clean energy to underserved communitiesinNepal and Colombia, and supporting programs thatincreaseaccess to safe water and sanitationinIndia. Thanks to the hard work of teams across our company, we’vereduced our emissions by over55 percentsince 2015. We’vecrossed key milestones on our environmental journey. And we’rerising to the generational challenge of climate change by workingwith companies and communities that spantheglobe. We’re also building our products with more recycled and renewablematerial than ever — work that helps to drive down our carbonfootprint. Our customers play an important role in thiseffort. When you participate in the Apple Trade-In program, you’re helpingto bring us closer to the day our products will be made withouttaking anything fromtheEarth. What does all this work add up to? Progress. And that progress issorely needed, because the impacts of climate change are all aroundus. Its frontlines are not in boardrooms or government buildings —they’re in communities. And we owe it to our global communityto rise to the challenge of climate change with all the innovation, empathy, and commitment wecanmuster. Apple 2030 is our commitment to be carbon neutral for our entirefootprint by the end of the decade. We’ll get there byinnovatingat every stage of the product lifecycle — from how they’remade,to what they’remadefrom. The proof is in our products. Last year, more than20 percentofthe materials we shipped in Apple products came from recycledsources. MacBook Air is our first product made with more than50 percentrecycled material, and we’re making important stridesacross all of our products. The iPhone 15 lineup, Apple WatchSeries 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 use 100 recycled cobalt in theirbatteries. More than99 percentof the tungsten in our productscomes from recycled sources. And we’re drivinginnovationaround the world to improve the way our industryrecyclesand recoversmaterials. That starts with bringing new clean energy online across our supplychain. Today, more than 320 suppliers have committed to usingrenewable electricity for Apple production. With over 16 gigawattsalready online, they’re avoiding more than18 million metrictonsof greenhousegasemissions. LisaJackson VP, Environment, Policy andSocialInitiatives Our teams and suppliers are a part of so manycommunities,so Apple’s work to protect the planet takes us around the world. Report highlights Reduced our overallemissions by morethan 55 percent Introduced our mostsignificant product emissionsreductions to-date Increased our use ofrecycled materials Advocated forreporting transparency As part of our commitment togreenhouse gas emissions disclosures,we endorsed the landmark CaliforniaClimate Corporate Data AccountabilityAct (CA SB 253) to improve transparencyand drive progress in the fight againstclimate change. We’re making steady progress on ourjourney toward using only recycled andrenewable materials in our products. In 2023, 22 percent of the materialswe shipped in Apple products camefrom recycled sources.4This includes,99 percent of tungsten, 71 percent ofaluminum, 52 percent of cobalt, 25 percentof gold, and 24 percent of lithiumin our products.5 Innovations in design and clean energy drovedramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissionsfor the fall Apple Watch lineup — the most significantfrom our business-as-usual scenario.2T
