Bridging this gap demandscollaborative efforts from stakeholders across sectors,particularly social enterprises. These organizationsoperate at the intersection of profit and purpose,leveraging innovative approaches to tackle social andenvironmental challenges. By harnessing the power ofAI, social enterprises have the potential to revolutionizethe way we address pressing issues, from healthcareand education to environmental conservation andbeyond. In this way, they are paving the way fora future where technological advancements aredirectly aligned with the United Nations SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs), creating a moreequitable, sustainable and just world for all. In an era defined by rapid technological advance,the transformative potential of artificial intelligence(AI) stands as both a beacon of promise and achallenge. It has become increasingly evident thatAI is not merely a tool for innovation but, whendeployed responsibly and ethically, can be a forceforsocial innovation– improving equity, shapingsocieties and redefining the global landscape. At the 2024 Annual Meeting of the World EconomicForum in Davos, social innovators, the privatesector and technology organizations came togetherto launch the AI for Social Innovation initiative,hosted by the Schwab Foundation’s Global Alliancefor Social Entrepreneurship. This initiative aimsto ensure that AI improves lives and acceleratesimpact, and social innovators play a pivotal role here. Yet, realizing the promise of AI for social impacthinges on more than just technological prowess. Itrequires helping social innovators recognize exactlyhowthe technology can amplify their impact modelsand equipping social innovators with bespokeknowledge, skills and resources to leverage thetechnology effectively. Training programmes,capacity-building initiatives and knowledge-sharing platforms are essential. Moreover, ensuringdialogue between the private sector, technologyorganizations and social innovators is crucial forcreating fit-for-purpose solutions that are scalableand sustainable, and can address the most pressingchallenges facing our world today. In this first report on the status quo of AI in thesocial innovation space, we lay the foundation forenabling social innovators around the world to useAI for impact. We map out the sector and highlightconcrete examples at the forefront of driving thedeployment of AI for social impact. The pace at which AI technologies evolve is nothingshort of astonishing. From machine learningalgorithms to natural language processing systems,innovations in AI have permeated various facets ofour lives, promising efficiency, optimization and newavenues for problem-solving. Chances are that bythe time this work is released, the development ofAI would have outpaced some of the informationpresented herein. However, within this wave ofprogress lies the digital divide. Disparities in accessto technology between the Global North and Southpersist, amplifying existing inequalities and hinderingthe potential of AI to truly benefit all of humanity.
