This BIS Working Paper examines the impact of the pandemic-induced increase in container freight rates on Colombia, a country with a significant reliance on international trade. The author uses a quantitative model of international trade to assess the welfare effects of the disruption on Colombia, and finds that the increase in container freight rates has led to higher transportation costs for Colombian importers, which in turn has led to higher prices for consumers and reduced purchasing power. The study concludes that the increase in container freight rates has had a negative impact on Colombia's economy, particularly on low-income households.
