Contents Acknowledgements75 Introduction About this report For many years, Textile Exchange has worked on improvingdata quality and increasing transparency in the industry. However, there is a lot more work to be done, and weencourage the industry to help us further improve thequality and accessibility of global fiber and raw materialsproduction data. Only through collaboration and joint effortscan we measure our progress and achieve our goals. Welcome to the 12th edition of Textile Exchange’sMaterials Market Report. TheMaterials Market Report, first launched in 2013, is acomprehensive, annual publication that provides uniquedata and insights into global fiber and raw materialproduction, helping the industry to measure and makeprogress toward its goals. We believe that climate actionstarts at the source of the materials we choose. We sincerely thank all those who have contributed dataor information to this report for making it possible. TheMaterials Market Reportshares the best available dataon global fiber and material production volumes alongsideprogram-specific volumes and other insights.it is not withinthe scope of theMaterials Market Reportto assess programsor standards, and the information should not be used orconsidered as advice or recommendation in any direction. Important note about the scope of data included inthis report This report covers total fiber and raw materialproduction volumes, irrespective of whether they areused for apparel, home textiles, footwear, or any otherapplication. For the purpose of this report, leather, rubber, anddown are considered non-fiber raw materials and aretherefore included separately from global fiber data. it’s important to recognize that compiling global market dataon fibers and raw materials is challenging, and the quality ofavailable data is often limited. The collection of primary datafrom suppliers is beyond the scope of this report, so we relyon secondary data from industry associations, internationalorganizations, governmental organizations, standardsetters, and research institutes. While Textile Exchangehas collected, analyzed, and compiled this information ingood faith and has cross-checked it wherever possible, thereport is intended for general guidance and informationalpurposes only.due to common gaps and inconsistencies inglobal market data, modeling has frequently been applied. Textile Exchange is aware of the interest inunderstanding the proportion of fiber and raw materialproduction volumes that can be attributed to apparel, footwear, and home textiles. Since data on this iscurrently very limited, Textile Exchange is workingon a project to improve this data.in the meantime, asa starting point and to aid interpretation of the dataincluded in this report, Textile Exchange has includedvery rough estimates of the breakdown of fiber andmaterial volumes by product application on page 8. Executive summary The global fiber market Polyester Cotton Global fiber production increased from around 125 milliontonnes in 2023 to a record132 million tonnesin 2024. This ispredominantly due to growth in the production of new virginfossil-based synthetics. Cotton remains thesecond most widely produced fiberafterpolyester. Global cotton fiber production decreased from 24.8million tonnes in 2022/23 to24.5 million tonnesin 2023/24,with cotton’s share of the global fiber market decreasing from20% to 19% during this period. Polyester continues to be themost widely produced fiberin the world, accounting for 59% of global fiber productionin 2024, up from 57% in 2023.in terms of volume, polyesterfiber production increased from 71 million tonnes in 2023 to78million tonnesin 2024. Since 2000, when global fiber production was 58 milliontonnes, production has more than doubled and it isexpectedto grow to 169 million tonnesin 2030 if business as usualcontinues. While the industry has made commitments to alignwith the Paris Agreement by keeping global warming to a1.5°C pathway, trends, such as the industry’s reliance on virginfossil-based synthetic materials and the limitations of textile-to-textile recycling, threaten to undermine the industry’scommitments to its climate goals. The market share of virgin cotton covered by the programsthat shared data for this report increased to an estimated34%in 2023/24, up from 31% in 2022/23. Recycled polyesterfiber production increased from around8.9 million tonnes in 2023 to around9.3 million tonnesin2024. However, due to the larger increase in virgin polyesterproduction, there was adecrease in the overall market shareof recycled polyester from around 12.5% of global polyesterproduction in 2023 to around12.0%in 2024. Better Cotton, including its equivalents Agro-2,integratedProduction System of Andalucía, Spain (iPS),israelCotton Production Standard System (iCPSS),myBMP, andResponsible Brazilian Cotton (ABR), made up the majorityof this 34%, accounting for 23% of all virgin cotton producedin 2023/24.
