Theownersofcomputesawtheirwealthexplodeaslaborcostsvanished.Meanwhile,realwagegrowthcollapsed.Despitetheadministration’srepeatedboastsofrecordproductivity,white-collarworkerslostjobstomachinesandwereforcedintolower-payingroles. Whencracksbeganappearingintheconsumereconomy,economicpunditspopularizedthephrase“GhostGDP“:outputthatshowsupinthenationalaccountsbutnevercirculatesthroughtherealeconomy. IneverywayAIwasexceedingexpectations,andthemarketwasAI.Theonlyproblem…theeconomywasnot.
