The GSMA Innovation Fund forClimate Resilience and Adaptation The GSMA Innovation Fund grant for HelloTractor, a farm equipment sharing app and GPSfleet management solution, has enabled thedevelopment of a weather-based tractor demandforecast tool, connecting farmers in Nigeria facingunpredictable rainfall with tractor owners. The company connectsfarmers in need of mechanisation services to versatile andmanoeuvrable tractors suited for small plots of land. Thesetractors come with attachable implements that can be usedfor tilling, planting, harvesting and other vital farming needs.Farmers can request these services through a local bookingagent or the Hello Tractor mobile app. Booking agents alsohelp farmers to assess their mechanisation needs, whiletractor owners receive the enhanced security of remote assettracking and virtual monitoring. After booking, farmers arematched with a certified tractor operator for an agreed date, and payment is directly made to the operator or through theagent, who earns a commission. The GSMA Innovation Fund was also used toimplement a PAYG financing model and conduct15 training and marketing workshops for over 600farmers regarding Hello Tractor’s services. Duringthe grant period, Hello Tractor developed andimplemented Short Message Service (SMS) anddigital learning tools, targeting 3,541 farmers. About the GSMA InnovationFund project Introduction Hello Tractor is one of the startups supported by theGSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience andAdaptation, launched in 2022. The project spanned18 months from November 2022 to April 2024. Withthe support of the GSMA Innovation Fund, HelloTractor successfully developed a weather-baseddemand forecast tool that can produce a dynamicmap of farmer demand for services, based onhistorical associations between rainfall activity (andother variables) and tractor behaviour within thatcustomer’s market. displaced by floods5 and the estimated economicvalue of agricultural-related losses stood at about₦700 billion6 ($1.68 billion). In an agrarian economythat relies heavily on rainfed farming, decreasingand erratic rainfall patterns can adversely affectcrop yields and significantly impede mechanisationrates, primarily through delays in tractor services, while tractor owners face income losses due toservice delays resulting from inaccurate localisedweather forecasts. Mechanisation of agriculturein Nigeria Sustainable agricultural mechanisation1playsa critical role in driving the productivity andprofitability of farming activities. It eases and reduceshard labour, relieves labour shortages, ensuresthe timeliness of agricultural operations, reducespost-harvest loss, increases output per hectare andimproves the efficient use of resources.2 However, inNigeria, the availability of farm machinery, measuredby units of horsepower per 1,000 hectares, remainsextremely low at 0.01, in contrast to countries likeChina (7.02) and India (1.32).3 Climate change is also exacerbating desertificationin Nigeria (particularly in the north), reducing theamount of arable land available for agriculture andin turn threatening the livelihoods of farmers. Thiswhiplashof extreme weather conditions severelydisrupts agricultural activities in Nigeria.7 Farmers without tractor access rely on manuallabour for all farm operations, requiring significanttime, physical effort and hired help. This manualapproach is 40 times slower and 2.5 times moreexpensive than mechanised farming. Nigeriastruggles with low agricultural productivity, mainlydue to the lack of mechanised agricultural systemsand low rates of technology adoption.4 Barriersinclude poor access to finance, the high costs ofmechanised farm equipment, and lack of awarenessof the benefits of mechanisation. Farmers across Africa facereal challenges in havingthe resources that theyneed to cultivate their mostvaluable resource—theirland. You can supplementlabour loss wi
