Smart farming solutionsfor anticipatory actionin Kenya COUNTRY:Kenya PROBLEM ADDRESSED: Lack of accurate and timely data forsmallholder farmers on crop health andweather patterns The GSMA Innovation Fund for AnticipatoryHumanitarian Action supported Synnefa to integratesatellite imagery in FarmCloud – a mobile-basedfarm management platform. The platform providesreal-time data on crop health and weather patternsto smallholder farmers in Kenya. Through a USSDinterface, community engagement and training,FarmCloud provides soil moisture data, weatherupdates and agronomy support. This enablessmallholder farmers to make more informed farmingdecisions, boost productivity and improve theirresilience to the impacts of climate change. This initiative was funded by the UK Foreign,Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and supported by the GSMA and its members. The Fund backed solutions that leverage mobile digital technology to help anticipate potentialhumanitarian impacts and enable effective early response. By focusing on the important theme ofanticipatory action, the Fund contributes towards the minimisation of humanitarian impacts andthe improvement of preparedness in the face of sudden-onset crises. The project Prior to the GSMA-funded project, Synnefa developedFarmCloud, a farm management platform that leveragesmobile technology to empower smallholder farmers inAfrica. With support from the GSMA Innovation Fund forAnticipatory Humanitarian Action, Synnefa expanded theFarmCloud platform by integrating satellite imagery andbuilding a USSD interface to make it more accessible forsmallholder farmers without smartphones and help thembecome more prepared for climate-related hazards. The new FarmCloud platform was tested and validated inpilot communities in two counties of Kenya – Makueni andKitui – to ensure it met the needs of different farmers withaccurate and actionable information, such as weatherdata, satellite data and agronomy support. The projectalso aimed to identify ways in which FarmCloud could bescaled and rolled out to other communities and regionsacross Africa. Project activities FarmCloud user interface design Final evaluation An evaluation was conducted in each of the two countiesto assess the impact of the project. Qualitative andquantitative data were collected from representativesamples of farmers in both locations. Focus groupdiscussions and structured surveys were conducted withfarmers, alongside key informant interviews with projectpartners. The findings showed that using FarmCloudhad positive results, including improved crop yieldsand better household incomes (see Outcome 3). Theevaluation also shed light on areas of improvement forSynnefa, such as expanding field agent support andincorporating additional features like voice advisory andmarket integration tools to help connect farmers directlyto buyers and markets. The first step was to develop and test mock UI designsthat would be integrated in the web and USSD interfaces. This required extensive user engagement, with feedbackfrom farmers and the Synnefa tech team used to createuser-friendly designs with clear language.
