Foreword Pedro Gomez Head, Industry Agenda;Member of the ExecutiveCommittee, WorldEconomic Forum Bin WeiPresident, State Grid EnergyResearch Institute Asia stands at the heart of the global transitionto a green economy. Home to more than half ofthe world’s population and much of its industrialoutput, the region is a key driver for global growthand innovation. In that light, how Asia choosesto decarbonize will determine not only its owneconomic resilience and competitiveness, but alsothe world’s ability to meet shared sustainability goals. immediate actions enterprises can take, as well asexploring long-term strategies for success. Throughcase studies featuring leading businesses, thepaper presents decarbonization not as merely acost, but as a potential catalyst for transformationand value creation. As one of the world’s production hubs andinnovation engines, Asia has an opportunity to bea platform for scaling value chain decarbonization.By focusing on collaboration and innovation, the region can redefine what sustainable growthmeans – for businesses, economies and societyon a global scale. Value chain decarbonization is one of the mostcomplex and significant frontiers of corporateaction. For Asia, this challenge is especiallysignificant: the region’s economies are deeplyinterconnected through trade, manufacturing, andresource and capital flows, making them essentialto the world’s collective net-zero pathway. The World Economic Forum, together with itsfellowship partner, State Grid Corporation of China, and CDP, its data partner, would like to thank allthe experts and business leaders involved in co-curating this white paper through our workshopsand consultations. The success of the global transition to a low-carbon economy is critically dependent uponAsia. The region powered over half of the globalGDP (gross domestic product) growth in 2024 andis one of the world’s most important manufacturinghubs, with manufactured products such asphotovoltaics, electric vehicles and batteriessupporting the transition globally. These roles, together with Asia’s surging energy demand, rapidurbanization and increasing population, have alsoresulted in its contribution to over half of the world’scarbon dioxide emissions. Asia is rapidly emerging as a leader in this domain. For example, the region is now a key driver ofgrowth for science-based climate target setting, with the number of validated companies in theregion increasing by 134% between the end of2023 and the end of the second quarter of 2025.Meanwhile, CDP data shows that over 8,400 Asiancompanies now disclose climate data, even thoughtransparency and action remain uneven based ondisclosure data; developed Asian countries leadthis process, while emerging nations such as Chinaand several South-East Asian countries are makingsolid progress. Political and geoeconomic realities across regionsare shifting, while corporate action for green growthcontinues to deliver. Emissions along the valuechain, which accounts for 65–95% of corporatecarbon footprints in Asia, remains one of thehardest areas to address, as value chains operatebeyond companies’ direct control. Yet value chaintransition is pivotal to the region, both becauseof Asia’s historically significant and still prominent
