They would enable innovators and researchers to make new discoveries and tobuild new businesses, products and jobs. It would improve Australia’s global andregional competitiveness, and create new export markets and opportunities. They would also bring non-quantifiable benefits, including improving Australia’snational security, gaining greater agency over sensitive data and applications, and improving economic and supply chain resilience. Using AI in citizen servicescould see better outcomes and high public value as long as implemented withappropriate guardrails in place. Executive Summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) will offer transformative economicopportunities for Australia. The critical choice for Australia todayis which of these economic opportunities does Australia wantto realise. While Australia is well-positioned to realise each of these opportunities, theywill require concerted action to achieve. This includes investment in new dataand compute infrastructure and AI research, workforce skills and traininginitiatives, and ensuring the development of safe, responsible and democraticAI applications that support public trust and confidence. With coordinatedaction across government, industry, and education, Australia can position itselfas a trusted, capable, and regionally significant AI economy by 2030, securinglong-term productivity and inclusive growth. The purpose of this report is to articulate and model the three main economicopportunities Australia could realise from AI to inform the choice about thefuture Australia wishes to aim for. It leverages original research, generative AI fordata classification, and stakeholder consultations with over 40 representativesfrom a wide range of industries and industry bodies including technology, datacentres, governments and small businesses. The research was overseen by anindependent advisory committee of five industry bodies heavily involved inAustralia’s AI opportunity. The opportunities examined in the report are: Key Data Points 1.AI adoption:Where Australia is primarily an adopter of AI technology acrossindustries, leading to increased labour productivity2.Developing Domestic AI capabilities:Where Australia captures value in the supplychain, to deliver AI products and services domestically3.Becoming a Regional Hub:Where Australia strives for regional leadership, and aims tobecome an exporter of AI products and services By 2030, AI could deliver annual benefits worth* The report finds that if Australia aims for all three of these opportunities, it could add$142bn per annum to the Australian economy by 2030. We estimate that adopting AI across industries could add up to $112bn tothe economy by 2030, with the gains largest in Australia’s industries with thelowest productivity. As AI diffusion is possible across industries, it would havebroad-based benefits, spurring average wage growth of 7% across industriesand alleviating workforce shortages in critical areas such as the care sectorby freeing up time for high-value activities.
