To accelerate this progress, supportive regulatory and policy environmentsto de-risk and attract investments inrenewable energy are paramount. Six years ago, the mobile industry becamethe first industry to commit to the 17 UNSustainable Development Goals (SDGs).With the targets for 2030 rapidly approaching, this annual report provides an update onhow our industry is progressing against theSDGs and identifies the areas that warrantadditional focus to deliver impact. The past year has been a challenging one, withgeo-political upheaval, rising inflation and theeffects of the climate crisis affecting billionsaround the world. The COVID-19 pandemicslowed our progress toward the SDGs and, while global circumstances are challenging, it iscrucial that we keep working towards the 2030targets and building a better future for us all. Despite the multiple challenges, this year’sreport shows that the mobile industryincreased its impact on all SDGs in 2021,with the biggest improvements recordedin our contribution to SDG 1: No Poverty,SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 4: QualityEducation. While growth remains belowpre-pandemic levels, we are starting toregain our momentum and, in the comingyear, I hope that we will see an accelerationin our impact on the SDGs. As connectivity lies at the heart of theseefforts, this year our report has a strongfocus on digital inclusion and looks at howwe can accelerate the rate at which peopleare included in the digital economy. Today, 96% of the world’s population iscovered by mobile broadband networksand more than half of the world is usingmobile internet. However, the usage gapremains: 3.2 billion people live in areascovered by mobile broadband networks butdo not use mobile internet. The pandemicreally highlighted this divide, with millionsof people left behind when they were unableto switch their business or education online. If the past few years have taught us anything,it is that change and challenges are inevitable.Equally, we have seen the incredible resilienceof the human spirit and the power of workingtogether to overcome challenges. As theworld adapts to and emerges from the manychallenges we face, keeping the promise ofthe SDGs has never been more important. The road ahead is not an easy one but, as anindustry, we remain committed to acceleratingour progress towards achieving the SDGs andbuilding a better, more sustainable
