1.InternationalInvestmentPosition □As of theendof thesecondquarterof 2025,Korea’s netinternationalinvestmentposition(netIIP)was$1,030.4billion(preliminary),down$53.6billionoverthequarter(fromtheendofthefirstquarterof2025). □The outstandingamount ofKorea'sinvestment abroadwas$2,681.8 billion,up$165.1 billionover thequarter. □TheoutstandingamountofforeigninvestmentinKoreawas$1,651.4billion,up$218.6billionoverthequarter. 2.ExternalAssets inDebtInstrumentsandExternalDebt □As of theendof thesecondquarterof 2025,net externalassetsin debtinstruments(external assetsminus externaldebt)was$357.2billion,down$10.7billionover thequarter(fromtheendof thefirstquarterof2025). *Externalassetsandexternal debtexcludeequityandinvestment fundsharesofdirectinvestments,equitysecuritiesof portfolioinvestments,financial derivativesandotherequityfrom IIP assetsorliabilities. □TheoutstandingamountofKorea'sexternalassetsindebtinstrumentswas$1,092.8billion,up$41.4billionoverthequarter. ―Short-termexternal assetsincreased by$18.4billionandlong-termexternalassetsincreased by$23.1billion. □Korea'sexternaldebtwas$735.6billion,up$52.1billionoverthequarter. ―Short-termexternal debt increased by$17.7billionandlong-termexternaldebtincreased by$34.4billion. oThe short-termexternal debtratio(vis-à-vis reserveassets)was 40.7%. InternationalInvestmentPosition (billiondollars) (billiondollars,%,%p) InternationalInvestment Position 1.Definition -TheInternational Investment Position(IIP)isastatistical statement ofthestockatacertain pointintimeofthe value andcomposition ofthefinancialassets,e.g.,Korea'sinvestmentabroad,andliabilities,e.g.,foreigninvestment inKorea,ofaneconomy’s residentsvis-à-visitsnonresidents.Itscoverageis identicalto that of theFinancial Accountinthe BalanceofPayments,whichis aset offlowstatistics. -ExternalAssetsin DebtInstrumentsandExternalDebtare theactualfinancialassets andliabilitiesof aneconomy’sresidents vis-à-visnonresidents.Thesefiguresinclude debtsecurities,loans,and tradecredits,butexcludeinvestmentsinequitycapital,equitysecurities,financialderivatives,andotherequityfromtheIIP. 2.Periodicity:Quarterly 3.Method of Compilation -TheInternational InvestmentPosition andExternal AssetsandDebt arecompiledby valuingthestocks ofexternalfinancialassets andliabilitiesatthe marketpricesprevailingat theendof the reportingperiod. -Assetsandliabilities denominatedin currenciesother thanthe U.S.dollarare translatedinto U.S.dollars using thecross rates for majorcurrenciesagainstthe U.S.dollarasof theend ofthe reporting period. 4.Composition 4.1International Investment Position -Directinvestments is acategoryof cross-borderinvestment(equity,intercompanydebtssuchas loans,etc.)made byaresidentinoneeconomywith theaimofcontrolling orexercisingasignificant degreeofinfluence onthe management ofan enterprisethat isresidentinanothereconomy.As ageneralrule,an investmentwhoseinvestoracquiresequitywith anentitlementto atleast10%ofthe voting rightsinthe investedenterprise falls intothis category. -Portfolioinvestments include moneymarketinstruments inadditiontoequitysecuritiesand debtsecurities inthe form ofgovernmentbonds,aswellas corporatebonds,butexclude financialtransactions capturedas“directinvestments“oras“reserve assets.“ -Financial derivatives represent theappraised balancearising fromresidents’external derivative transactions,the gainsonwhich areclassifiedasfinancial derivative assets and thelossesasfinancialderivativeliabilities. -Otherinvestments isaresidual categorythat includesallfinancialtransactionsnot contained withindirectinvestments,portfolioinvestments,financialderivatives,or reserveassets.Itissubdivided intoloans,trade creditsandadvances,currencyand deposits,otheraccountsreceivable/payable,otherequity,and specialdrawing rights(SDRs). -Reserve assets are foreign reserves. 4.2External Assets in Debt Instruments andExternal Debt -SectorClassification:classified into fourcategories,inaccordancewiththetransactors. oGeneralGovernment:thecentral government,local governments,andsocialsecurityinstitutions. oCentralBank:Bankof Korea. oDeposit-TakingCorporations,Exceptthe Central Bank:commercialbanks,savingsinstitutions,etc. oOtherSectors:otherfinancialcorporations(securitiescompanies,insurancecompanies,etc.),enterprises,etc. -PeriodClassification:financialproducts based onanoriginalmaturityofoneyearor lessare classified asshort-termand those withmaturitiesexceedingoneyearas long-term. -TypeClassification:financialinstruments are classifiedinaccordance withtheircharacteristicsinto:debtsecurities(governmentbonds,corporatebonds,etc.);loans;currency and deposits;tradecredits and advances;intercompanylending;otherassetsindebtinstrumentsand otherdebtliabilities;andreserveassets.
