This white paper, ‘Sustainabilitythrough delivery’, is testament to ourcommitment at Arup to championprofessional project management and toexplorethetransformativepotentialofP3M methodologies in achieving criticalsustainability goals for our clients. This paper calls for a paradigm shift inhow we approach project management,emphasising the need for a collaborativeeffortbetweenP3Mmanagersandsustainability professionals. Our aspiration is that this documentserves as a catalyst for further discussion,innovation and action within the globalproject management community. The paper outlines the role P3M practicescan play in supporting the delivery ofsustainability outcomes. It covers reasonsand blockers for why these practices arenot being fully implemented and presentspossible solutions and actions that can betaken to overcome them. Arup have been named as the 2025‘Organisation of the year – consultancy/service’ atthe Unlock Net Zero Awards. Described as “a rolemodel of Net Zero organisations.” By sharing Arup’s insights and practicalsolutions, we aim to inspire P3Mprofessionals to take proactive stepstowards integrating sustainability intotheir practices, ultimately contributingto a more sustainable and prosperousfuture for all. By addressing thesechallenges head-on, we believe P3Mprofessionals can ultimately enhancetheir contributions to the delivery ofsustainability outcomes. Ourresearchhighlightsthesignificantimpact that P3M managers can have inpromoting sustainability at every stageof a project’s lifecycle. From projectinception through to transition intooperations and project closeout, theapplication of robust project, programmeand portfolio management methodologiescan ensure that sustainability goals arenotonlymetbutexceeded. We were recognised for turning ambition into tangibleaction - reducing our own emissions whilst driving widerchange across projects, partnerships and supply chains. We understand the importance of acting on climate change – which iswhy we don’t just tell people what to do, but also act upon it. We lead byexample,sincesettingourscience-basedtargetsin2019wehave: –Reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 86%–Transitioned to 100% renewable electricity across global operations–Committedtophasingoutfossilfuelheatinginallofficesby2030.
