They have seen optimization inseveral areas, including throughput, material consumption, yield, and uptime. All these improvements help reducecosts, both CapEx and OpEx, with the former being the mostsignificantone, especiallygiventheongoingovercapacitysituation in the industry. The equipment supply wing has alsobeenverysupportive, first, withtheindustry’sshiftfromPERCto TOPCon, and then with the addition of 2 more technologies- back contact and HJT - to mass production. However, thisyear’seditionofTaiyangNewsCellProductionEquipmentSurvey2025reflectsthedevelopmentsintheproductionequipment arm of PV, focusing primarily on TOPCon, whilealso covering updates on HJT and BC equipment whererelevant and available. In junction formation, the diffusion process plays a key role, with boron diffusion used for TOPCon. The changes relatedto emitter formation have occurred over a short period. Theindustry was evaluating selective emitters 2 years ago, whichhave now become the mainstream. And with the industryadopting laser-assisted metallization, the industry is marchingback to blanket emitters with ultra-high sheet resistance; thesurveyincludesmentionsof300and500Ω/square. Passivationisthedefiningelementofhigh-efficiencyarchitectures. For TOPCon, this involves the formation ofa tunneling oxide and subsequent polycrystalline silicondeposition, followed by doping. LPCVD and PECVD are thedominant technologies here. LPCVD systems are offeredwith different integration levels for tunnel oxide and doping, whereas PECVD tools typically handle all steps in onechamber. Now,PVD,withseveralinherentbenefits, includingreduced safety and facility requirements, is also extensivelypromotedhere.Anotherinterestingsubjectinthefieldofpassivation is the passivation of edges originating from laserslicing of fully processed cells into 2, but not limited to. The survey explores 5 core process categories in solarcell production: surface preparation, emitter formation, passivation, metallization, and IV testing. In addition todiscussing the key developments on the equipment side foreach of these processing steps, the survey also includesdetailedspecificationstables(see.p.68).Strictlyfocusingon the products featured in these tables, this survey ismainly based on responses from 14 different production toolsuppliers, which provided data for a total of 81 products. Acriticalfocusarea,particularlyforTOPCon’sdual-sided silver requirement, ismetallization. A somewhatrevolutionary development, not just limited to metallizationbut also for the overall uptake of TOPCon, is laser-assistedmetallization.Inadditiontobenefitingmetallizationthroughpasteformulationoptimization,reducingfingerwidth,andsilver saving, this technology also decouples emitter formationfrom metallization. The survey, in addition to screen printing, the mainstream equipment required for metallization, alsodiscusses the details of paste optimization. Withinthesurface preparationstep, mostly accomplishedwith wet-benches, the survey covers a wide variety ofapplications, including saw damage etching (SDE), texturing, doped glass removal, edge isolation, rear side polishing, and p
