Table of contentsContextSummary of Day 1Summary of Day 2Main takeaways 4579 ContextThe IOE Climate Change and Just Transition Summit was held in Kuala Lumpur on 11-12September 2024 with the close collaboration of the Malaysian Employers’ Federation(MEF) and the support of the European Union (EU). The meeting was held as part ofIOE’s activities on climate change and just transition and was the first of its kind. It wasintended as a forum for discussion, capacity-building, raising awareness and providinginterested members with a forum for exchanging and learning from each other as wellas external experts and international stakeholders. The EU sponsored the participationcosts (travel and/or accommodation) of all international participants and IOE workedtogether with MEF colleagues on the logistics and organisation of the activities. A totalof 50 participants from 23 countries joined the event in-person and discussed priorities,challenges and experiences over the full two-day schedule. The event had the honourof several high-level representatives including the acting Ambassador of the EU toMalaysia, the President of the MEF, and the Malaysian Minister of Natural Resources andEnvironmental Sustainability. The detailed agenda of the meeting can be found in annex. Summary of Day 1A formal welcome was delivered by Ms Joanna Wasiewska, First Counsellor, Political Affairs,Press and Information Section, Delegation of EU to Thailand and was followed by remarksfrom MEF President, Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman. A recorded video with welcoming byMr Roberto Suárez Santos, Secretary-General, International Organisation of Employers(IOE) thanked all the participants and wrapped up the opening section of the first day. TheEU representative thanked all participants, highlighted the importance of collaborationand commended the IOE’s engagement with the EU in activities such as this one. The MEFPresident focused on the importance of business opportunities through investments in greentechnologies, circular economy and adequate policies for enabling private sector action. Healso expressed gratitude to the IOE and EU for the commitment to partnering with MEF in thisimportant event and is looking forward to further activities in this context. The IOE Secretary-General thanked all of the participants and MEF in particular for this excellent initiative andhighlighted the importance of engaging with IOE members as well as collective employeraction at the international level for ensuring support for enterprises of all sizes and businesspriorities in climate policies.The first presentations of the day were delivered during the first Member Spotlight session,which gave IOE members the chance to share and highlight some of the activities, challengesand experiences they’ve been dealing with in their national contexts and in their organisationswhen it comes to sustainability and climate action. Members from Bangladesh, India, Nigeriapresented their views in this session. Mr Farooq Ahmed, Secretary General and CEO of theBangladesh Employers Federation gave an overview first of all of the national situation, theparticular vulnerability of Bangladesh to the impacts of climate change and extreme weatheras well as some of the ongoing policy developments in the country. He finished by focusingon the importance of workforce development, skills and training as well as internationalcooperation for BEF. Mr Atul Sobti, Director General of the Standing Conference of PublicEnterprises (SCOPE) in India, explained the importance of this topic for India and how hisorganisation has been engaging in various initiatives and activities including a study with theILO on green skills and green technology development projects with the German developmentagency GiZ. Mr Adewale Oyerinde, Director General of the Nigeria Employers’ ConsultativeAssociation (NECA), stressed the need for capacity building when it comes to employers andclimate action and for different national approaches based on contexts and priorities. NECAhas been developing a project with the ILO on just transition and they have also recentlylaunched a policy working group on sustainability, ESG and just transition for their members.These presentations were followed by an introductory session by Mr Robert Marinkovic, IOEAdviser on Climate Change and Just Transition, that provided an overview of global policydevelopments and trends in this space, IOE activities and upcoming plans as well as ways inwhich employers can further develop their engagement and services around sustainability.The second Members Spotlight session was featuring IOE members from Barbados, Greece,Samoa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
