Packaging Cockpit......................................................................................................................38 Foreword The urgency to address packaging’s environmental impact has never been greater. Growingconcerns around waste, plastic pollution, and carbon emissions are driving regulatory pressuresand increasing demands fortransparent, standardized packaging data. To support businesses in this transition, WBCSD developed theSPHEREframework in 2021-aholistic sustainability assessment tool that helps companies navigate trade-offs between climate, nature, and compliance. However, robust assessments require consistent and comparable data, something the industry currently lacks. Companies today invest significant resources in collecting, reconciling, and interpreting packagingdata across suppliers, customers, and regulatory frameworks. Without a harmonized data model, businesses face compliance risks with policies such as theEuropean Packaging and PackagingWaste Regulation (PPWR), theCorporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), andDigital Product Passport (DPP) initiativesdriving transparency across packaging supply chains. A standardized approach will enable companies to reduce operational costs by eliminatingredundant data collection, enhance internal alignment between procurement, sustainability, andcompliance teams, strengthen risk management by ensuring regulatory compliance and mitigatingreputational risks, and unlock circular business models through improved reuse, recyclability, andtraceability tracking. In collaboration withAnthesis, WBCSD has analyzed regulatory data requirements and existingindustry models to identify pathways toward a global packaging data standard. This report is acritical step in ourCircularity Data Exchange (CDX) initiative, which will enable the upcomingGlobal Circularity Protocol for Business (GCP)-a framework for measuring and managingcorporate circularity. Launched in partnership withUNEP’s One Planet Network, the GCP willdebut atCOP30 in November 2025. Standardized packaging data is more than a compliance tool-it is astrategi
