Overview Last month over 75 attendees gathered in Bellevue, WA for the Northwest Robotics Alliance’s mostrecent event“Generative AI for Robotics”. The evening featured lively debate from industry leaderswho shared their views on the potential impact that rapidly advancing AI tools will have on the roboticsindustry and their role in shaping future advances. The Northwest Robotics Alliance, founded byCascadia Capital, Fresh Consulting, and MadronaVenturesbrings together leading founders, CEOs, investors and thought leaders on a regular basis tofurther the growth of the robotics industry in the region. Events like this will continue to offer opendiscussions regarding the latest industry trends and technological advancements. Defining Generative AI •Generative AI refers to a subset of artificial intelligence techniques that are used tocreatedata, text, photos, videos, code, 3D renderings or other new content derived from the large data sets they are trained on. •Generative AI tools have a wide range of applications including art and creativity, content generation, image andvideo synthesis, and conversational agents. In particular, natural language generation (NLG) tools such as ChatGPTare now being used across most industries to assist humans in everyday tasks. •As it relates to robotics, one of the most useful tools Generative AI brings to the table isdataaugmentation, enabling the ability to create synthetic training data to enhance the performance of machine learning models. Where is the Robotics Industry Heading? •Traditionally, the robotics industry has been focused on thedeployment of isolated, individual robots performing a single task.•With the growth of “orchestration”, the industry has been evolvingtoward the deployment of fleets of robots that are task specific, butcommunicate with each other to enhance performance at scale.•Going forward, developers will turn toward “fleets of fleets”, otherwiseknown as“federations”,of robots that perform several tasks thatcan be integrated into seamless work flows.•A key application of generative AI will be in making these federationssafe, secure, scalable and interoperable. Keynote speaker and Microsoft GM ofAutonomy & Robotics Tim Chung shares histhoughts on how generative AI is acceleratingthe robotics technology landscape For more information on Cascadia Capital’sRobotics, Automation and AI coverage, pleasecontact us or visitcascadiacapital.com Northwest Robotics Alliance: Event RecapGenerative AI for Robotics How is Generative AI Impacting Robotics Development? •The rapid development of large language models, like ChatGPT, and AI-assisted programming tools, like Codex, willgreatly increase the speedat whichhumanintent can be translated to robot intent, which will in-turngreatly increase the speed of overall robotics development and deployment. •One of the best use cases for natural language generation in robotics is in development assistance through thecreation ofmissionplansfor robots. For example, a developer can ask an NLG tool “what are the best test casesfor this robot?” and immediately receive optimized feedback. •Generative AI will alsoincreaseaccessibilityfor robotics development, making it easier for developers that lackproprietary knowledge of specific machines to control and manipulate them. For example, a developer with no priorknowledge of a system can use text translation to give the robot instructions, expanding the possibilities ofcollaboration across the industry. •Generative AI will help develop foundational models that could be transformative across all robot verticals.Foundational models serve as the building block or basis for more advanced AI applications, for example aConvolutional Neural Network (CNN) in the field of computer vision. CNNs are widely used for image recognitiontasks and have become a fundamental tool for many image-related AI applications. As developers continue to gaindomain-specific knowledge, the ability to bring context to a foundational model will improve significantly. •Overall, as Generative AI tools continue to improve, the ability for developers to communicate intent and utilizesynthetic training data will only grow, furtherclosingthe gap between what humans can do and what robotscando.
