INTRODUCTION Despite an overall2.5% increase in U.S. undergraduate enrollment inspring 2024 (due, in large part, to community college enrollment growth),many higher education institutions continue to experience enrollmentuncertainties that aren’t likely to disappear anytime soon. to inform their marketing, recruitment, and retention planning as theyprepare to engage and support their newest cohorts of students in thenext academic year. In2024,students,families,and colleges and universities facedunprecedented issues with the new FAFSA, resulting in 40% fewerhigh school students completing the form and more incoming studentsexperiencing delays in receiving financial aid offers. Thesedelays made it even harder for institutions to accuratelyestimate fall term enrollment numbers. With this added pressure, it’smore important than ever for higher education leaders to understandadmitted students’ perceptions and post-secondary plans for 2024–25. InMay 2024,Hanover Research surveyed over 1,000 studentswho were admitted to U.S. undergraduate and graduate programsfor 2024–25.The annual survey findings provide a window into thefactors that influence student enrollment decisions, their changingperceptions of higher education, and the types of support they expectfrom institutions in their first year. This year’s survey was fielded amonth later than usual to account for delayed decisions, and we askedadmitted students if any issues with FAFSA affected their decision toaccept, decline, or defer an offer of admission. Higher education leaders can and should use these findings 2024 ADMITTED STUDENT TRENDS Incoming students believe a college degree is valuable and their desire for campus life is on therise— yet financial and academic factors are still a major concern. 1.Admitted students’ likelihood of enrolling has increased 17percentage points in the last five years. 4.The on-campus student experience is making a comeback post-pandemic. Undergraduate and graduate admitted students’ likelihood to enroll hassteadily increased every year since 2020, from 62% to 79%. Today, ninein 10 students accepted to bachelor’s programs plan to enroll. Despitepublic scrutiny of higher education, the perceived value of a collegedegreeamong admitted students has remained steady as studentsrecognize enough benefits that they are willing to apply and, at increasinglevels, attend. After several years of focusing on virtual recruitment efforts and onlinelearning opportunities, in-person connection is re-emerging as a significantfactor in the college enrollment process. Student interest in on-campusvisits increased substantially this year, and extracurriculars and campuslife played a more significant role in where they decided to apply, accept,and enroll. 5.Student concerns about overall college preparedness and success areon the rise. 2.Academic quality is a top factor in student decisions about where toapply and enroll. When deciding where to apply and which institution to attend, academicquality and fit were the top factors across nearly every student group,underscoring the significance of ensuring academic offerings align withstudent needs. Institutions should make sure their academic programportfolios reflect the interests of prospective students, and each programhas clear features and benefits that students will value.
