This report highlights the importance of education for all children, but particularly for marginalized groups such as girls in low-income countries and countries facing fragility, conflict, and violence. Despite increased enrollment rates for both girls and boys in recent decades, learning remains a critical issue, and the gender gap in female labor force participation after education indicates that education and learning do not translate into labor market returns for women in the same way as they do for men. Schools play a crucial role in promoting gender equality and empowering students. The education girls receive at schools can shape their future and contribute to creating gender equality through education. The World Bank is the largest external financier of education worldwide and this note examines trends in girls' education and spotlights interventions that support girls' education. Key takeaways include the need to ensure that girls stay in school, learn well, and are able to translate their schooling into future gains.
