Introduction There are two main parts to the solution: Impacts of climate change onfarmers in Nigeria About the GSMA InnovationFund project Access to financial services anda digital marketplaceCrop2Cash connects smallholder farmers to1 Nigeria has experienced frequent and extendedperiods of drought and high temperatures causedby climate change. This is having a negative impacton food production. Northern Nigeria is particularlyaffected as most of the region suffers from periodsof severe drought. This is also where about 80% ofthe country’s maize production is concentrated –an important crop for food security1 as it accountsfor more than 50% of the country’s total grainconsumption and about 30% of daily caloric intake.2Northern Nigeria is also home to a large proportionof the country’s population living in poverty, andfarmers are highly vulnerable as they often lackaccess to data and information on how to adaptand build resilience to these risks. According tothe Poultry Association of Nigeria, in 2023, maizeprices in Nigeria reached a record high, with theaverage price per tonne exceeding N 480,000. Thisrepresents a more than 100% increase from theprevious year, with many experts pointing to extremeweather events, high input costs and pests anddiseases affecting maize crops.3 Crop2Cash is one of the startups supported bythe GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilienceand Adaptation.
