Wccftech Micron is one of the largest memory manufacturers, and in both the AIand consumer segments, the company has managed to dominatewith its industry-leading offerings. With the AI sector gobbling upDRAM modules, there's a sentiment that somehow, memory suppliersare responsible to the situation, and to address this thought, we satdown with Micron's VP of Marketing, Mobile and Client Business Unit, Christopher Moore, to know about the memory shortages. Micron's VP Talks About How MemoryShortages Won't Improve Before 2028,Despite Massive Investments Our discussion with Moore centered on how Micron is expanding itsproduction capacities and what kind of impact we can expect from theconsumer and AI segments moving forward. RELATED STORYNVIDIA Reveals Why the Company Is “Immune” toMemory Shortages — and How The Firm Prepaid Inventory to Keepthe AI Boom Running Micron & the Consumer Memory Segment: The UntoldStory Our first question to Moore directly targeted user sentiment regardingcurrent memory shortages, especially since the backlash againstMicron is significantly higher than that of other suppliers, primarily dueto the company's exit from its 'Crucial' consumer business. We askedMoore about whether memory suppliers are inclined towards cateringto the AI sector, leaving consumers behind, and here's what he had tosay: Well, first I would want to try to help everybody understand thatthe perception may not be exactly correct, at least from ourpoint of view. So I would never want to tell someone what tothink or that they're wrong, but our viewpoint is that we aretrying to help consumers around the world. We're just doing itthrough different channels. We still have a very sizablebusiness in the client and mobile markets. We are also, of course, servicing our data center customers. And what's going on right now is that the TAM and data centeris growing just absolutely tremendously. And we want to makesure that, as a company, we help fulfill that TAM as well. Micron says that its OEM consumer channel accounts for a largeportion of the company's market share, and for those unaware of whatthis means, the company supplies modules like LPDDR5 directly tointegrators like Dell, ASUS, and others, and then those manufacturerslater repackage these memory modules into their own referencedesigns. Moore claims that while the exit with Crucial created animage that Micron is 'ditching' consumers, in reality, the US-basedmanufacturer still holds a large portion of the consumer supply chain through the OEM model. Moore says that Micron is in contact with every single PC brand outthere to supply memory modules, but the company cannot ignore thedemand coming from AI right now. The primary reason Micron andothers are drawn to the AI industry is that the total addressable market(TAM) for DRAM manufacturers has expanded at a rapid pace, and asa business, Micron cannot afford to ignore the growing demand from this sector. What's happening now is that all these data center build outsare going on, and the TAM of the enterprise or data centerbusiness is growing what used to be 30, 35%, and then to 40%,and now to 50% and 60% of the overall market is requiringmore bits than what used to happen. And the entire industry isshort. So I think that's something for people to understand. This is not a Micron issue, it's an industry issue, where us andour peers or our competitors are all rushing to service thesesegments as much as we can, and there's just not enoughsupply to go around. It's a really unfortunate situation. But Ithink it's really important for people to understand we are still servicing the consumer market. In our conv
