Specifically, weset out here the findings from a research project exploring the work of third sector organisationsthat offer support to schools–through resources, workshops, and/or teacher training-for teaching What is aControversialIssue? •The AssociationforCitizenship Teaching (ACT) defines a controversial issue as one that istopical, emotive, disputed in terms of evidence, and on which there are major conflicts ofvalues and interests (ACT 2025 p.19). Issues that implicate student identities are •A range of social and political issues could be defined as ‘controversial’, and these
