In 2017, the industry experienced the first wave of 2Gsunsets, in addition to the ongoing CDMA sunsets. This firstwave was mainly driven by a few countries in Asia Pacificlooking to close their 2G networks to bolster 3G/4G The advent of 5G brought about the second wave ofnetwork sunsets to meet growing spectrum demand anduse spectrum resources efficiently. This was further spurredby declining traffic on legacy networks and the high cost of Of the 117 network sunsets between 2010 and 2023, morethan 50% were completed in the last three years. Some 111sunsets are planned in 2024 and 2025. Network sunsets by region and status To date, Asia Pacific has been at the forefront of networkshutdowns, followed by Europe and Latin America. Together,Europe and Asia Pacific are set to account for around 75% of total Technology trend: 2G versus 3G 2G sunsets supported 4G–Before the arrival of 5G, Asia Pacific was at the forefront of sunsets, with more 2G than 3G shutdowns.
