Despite this backdrop,Shellcontinues to provide a reliable source of energy that the UKneedsto power its industries, transport networks, and homes.During the same period, Shell itself has also undergone internaltransformations such as the announcement and appointmentof the new CEO in 2022 and relocation of its globalheadquarters from the Hague to London. Shell is active in every area of the energy industry.Its activitiesinclude oil & gas exploration, operating gas & liquid plants,running petrol stations, building electric vehicle charginginfrastructure, investing in renewable energy sources, andconducting research & development into new technologies toreduce emissions and support the UK’s transition to net zero. In this report, we assess the socioeconomic contributionShell made to the UK in 2022.This comprehensive studyquantifies not only the substantial impact of Shell UK’sdirecton-site operations, but also theindirectimpactstimulated bythe overall group’s supply chain spending, and theinducedimpactsupported through wage-funded consumption byShell UK’s employees and those working in its supply chains.These impacts are quantified in terms of gross value addedcontributions to GDP, the number of jobs supported, andgovernment tax revenues raised, as well as other importantsocial metrics to assess the company’s impact on society. 78,000Total jobs Shellsupported in theUK in 2022.Plus a further11,600jobs at retail andrefuelling outlets. Shell makes substantial economic and social contributionsto the UK economy.Across all three channels of impact, thecompany contributed an estimated £11.8 billion to the UK GDPin 2022, equivalent £1 for every £210 of the UK’s GDP. Shell alsosupported 78,000 jobs in the UK and £5.4 billion payments togovernment in the same year.1 Through Shell UK’s operational sites, Shell generated a £6.3billion gross value added contribution to UK’s GDP in 2022.Shell UK also directly employed 5,170 people across the UK,who were paid wages and salaries worth £1.7 billion in 2022.Through its activities, Shell UK paid and collected £4.0 billion intax payments for the UK government in 2022, equivalent to theaverage annual salary of 109,000 teachers. We estimatethat wage-funded consumption by employees working at ShellUK, and those working in its supply chains, stimulated a £2.8billion gross value added contribution to UK GDP and 35,000jobs. This economic activity also stimulated £749 million in taxpayments for the UK government. Shell has a notable social impact on UK societyby supportingemployment opportunities for individuals across differentage groups, including segments of the population who areoften under-represented in the labour force. Through theeconomic activity stimulated in its supply chain and wage-funded consumption, we estimate that Shell supported 9,000jobs for people aged under 25 in 2022, or 12% of the total jobssupported. This was slightly higher than the overall UK averageof 11%.
