This is a citybuilt on ideas and innovation – richin history, deep in culture, but alwayslooking forward. At Arup, we’re proud to be part of that tradition, helping to shape a city that is resilient, inclusive, and fit for the next century. To creating a centrally located Wellbeing Hub thatbrings people together through mental and physicalhealth support. To celebrate this milestone, we invited some ofour early career professionals to imagine bold, tangible, and creative responses to the challengesand opportunities facing Edinburgh’s futureand it’s people. The result was our “Ideas forEdinburgh” competition, judged by some of ourclients and partners whose insight and perspectiveadded real challenge, credibility and value to theprocess. To delivering sustainable active travel routes, connecting the north and east of the city throughcycling and walking infrastructure. And reimagining the Scotland Street Tunnel as amulti-use cultural, exhibition and public space –blending heritage with innovation. Each idea is grounded in the principles ofintegrated design, long-term thinking, and civicpurpose. They are provocations, not prescriptions– designed to spark conversation and inspirenew forms of collaboration across Edinburgh’scommunities, institutions, and infrastructure. It was inspiring to hear the passion, creativity, breadth and optimism that our junior colleaguesbrought to the table. Their ideas reflect the kindof forward-thinking, human-centred solutionsEdinburgh will need in the decades to come. As we look ahead to the city’s next 100 years,I hope these ideas encourage all of us to thinkbigger, bolder, and together. The cultural, artistic, and historicalspaces that shape collective memory, fostercommunity, and bring vibrancy to urban life.Edinburgh’s designation as a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site reflects its rich history, and vibrantcultural scene. Though Edinburgh is mighty incharacter, it is compact in scale; this makes itall the more important to make the most of allavailable space and every piece of the city’sexisting infrastructure. Lynette YangEngineer Advisory Serviceslynette.yang@arup.com The Site Spanning one kilometre beneath the city centre, the tunnel connects Canonmills to WaverleyStation and carries a layered history. Originallybuilt in the mid-1800s as a railway link, it laterbecame home to the Scottish Mushroom Company.During World War II, it served as the city’s largestair-raid shelter, and in the 1970s, it even operatedas a car dealership. Our Vision Impact Though the area surrounding the Scotland StreetTunnel blends charm with well-used facilities, parts of it remain underutilised. Our proposal seeksto regenerate this space by preserving what works, upgrading what doesn’t, and reimagining thetunnel. This is about more than only the tunnel; it’sabout activating the entire area for the people whouse it such as park-goers, basketball players, dogwalkers, families, and the wider community. It’sabout creating a space that reflects and supportslocal life, where nearby initiatives like The Yardand local businesses can thrive, and where artistscan leave their mark on the city’s evolving identity. Our vision for the Scotland Street Tunnel is totransform it into a shared cultural space. Weenvision a vibrant, inclusive spac
